Yes, it is based on Gecko.

 

I was a stalwart IE user for years. Recently tried FF and love the No Script and AdblockPlus addons. I recommend other IE users take 'em for a test drive

After trying some browser, I have a following conclusion: (not so sure, any contribution is welcomed )

Firefox:

- Pros: Secure (with Adblock, Noscript), fast, compatible with most of the webpages or programs like download managers...
- Cons:Memory hog, slow start-up

Opera:

- Pros: Secure (without extension), very fast (loading and start-up), customizable
- Cons: Incompatible with a lot of webpages, for example aol.com

K-Meleon:
- Pros: Very fast, very light, user-defined macros
- Cons: Engine incompalibility e.g, new Yahoo mail doesn't support k-meleon even though I set it as FF agent.

 

Hi... Could you be more specific about Opera rendering problems you're saying you're having with some sites?

 

AOL seems to work rather well for me on Opera, so I don't see what you're talking about !?

 

Maybe Opera/AOL developers has fixed the problem. Last month I used it, and I got AOL homepage displayed improperly in my Opera. I sent a feedback to Opera forum and they said that: (I copied the original words from them)

"This is due to CSS style sheet errors in the page code, from what I can tell. If the AOL developers had tested their site in Opera as well, they could have styled the page to show correctly in Opera as well.

For now, report it using Help > Report a site problem..."

I just install Opera and test with AOL webpage. The problem still exists...

 

Just some notes,

Not slow for me, faster than IE while browsing for sure. Besides more secure, and open, has better features (new features in IE are old news for FF and Opera), highly customizable.

Reversed: a lot of webpages are not well written. If you can, ban them. If you must use them, let them know their website is not good.
Same as FF, secure, full featured, customizable. Inovative.

For both, security issues, while not real life to begin with, are patched very fast.

In between worlds ( i was going to use another phrase, but this raises no criticism ).
What i said above concerns Windows XP. Because IE is Windows only, the comparison is only valid in MS environment.

 

Firefox starts up much faster in every Linux distro I've ever used.. Don't know why, but startup in Win usually seems very slow.

 

K-Meleon-

I'm starting to get the idea of this browser after using it and playing around with the settings for a couple of days.
This is definitely a browser I will use on my PC.

You know, it really makes me sick, I have just noticed that IE is using a lot of CPU time while scrolling certain pages, FF, Opera and IE6 do not have this problem, seems to be a major bug. What kind of amateurs are on the IE7 team? These are just a couple of examples, but it often happens on Wikipedia (scroll fast and check your CPU usage, IE7 scrolls very sluggish compared to other browsers. Edit: make sure you check out link number 3):

K-Meleon is very fast and smooth indeed. Do you guys just use the DEFAULT settings or do you TWEAK the settings for faster page loading?

Also does K-Meleon have a SPELL CHECK feature (like Firefox) that immediately identifies/underlines misspelled words as you type? If not, is there a plug-in for this?

 

FF takes 10 seconds to access after booting up. IE takes 4 seconds. The reason is because IE is embedded in Windows and is being accessed during boot up, where FF is not embedded and has to go through the entire startup when you access it. However, if you click off FF and click back on after a while during the same session, FF takes 4 seconds to access.

 

I've noticed the IE7 scrolling problem on many pages, sometimes even here on a long thread at Wilders.. most pages scroll ok, but there does seem to be a problem. Not sure what causes it though... And you're right, other browsers like Opera or K-Meleon don't do this at all.. one reason why I sometimes prefer the others...

 

Just use the default settings here.. seems to work fine for me. I'm not sure about your other question, probably best to ask in the official K-Meleon forums, you're sure to get a quick response...

 

I tweaked K-Meleon, takes a little getting used to but its worth it and its really not all that hard to do once you work your way around the settings.

 

I will have to look into it in more detail and experiment a little, I love KM also, it's the fastest browser I've used here. Seems to be quite good...

 

Can you please explain what you "tweaked" and what improvements (if any) you noticed.

I'm loving K-Meleon right now. The only thing I miss in Firefox is the "realtime" SPELL CHECKER.
