I dont find it interesting. Norton for some people has been bloatware and cpu/ram hungry, but much has changed with the 07/08 versions. For me this is old outdated news/bashing - he dosent even tell what versions hes refering to. The 07 versions of both is and av have been running very well on every computer I tested it on.

 

Agreed. Norton and Symantec AV solutions tend to have very good detection rates, and few false positives. The accusations of bloatware are long out of date.

 

CPU usage is VERY VERY low, and certainly not 40%, not even on my 1Ghz laptop. I would even say it comes close to NOD, except for when it updates. The update process indeed takes quite some time and ressources, here there is room for improvement. Besides this it almost all the time stays at 0%.

And then the recommendations: Clam AV and MS One Care .. might as well go without any ... sorry to say that.

Anyway, why am I taking this seriously and comment on this? Norton is fine in 2007 ... very fine.

I'm always neutral in a others opinion, but i just have to say that this is crap. Installed Norton 2003/4/5/6/7 in the past, and never had any problems... computer is slow? I can name enough other antiviruses who can manage to do that.
And recommend sygate firewall? there are enough better free firewalls (that still are supported)

IMO a program that uses a lot of resources would not qualify as a virus.
That would mean xp and vista are viruses

My own view is when AV comparatives and the usual leaktest guys both tell me that Norton is stealing and calling home then I will think again about this.

YES it is a funny. I agree with you. I believe his quote "syboy", he is referring to SpyBot Search and Destroy, but could be wrong.

That's why I posted this article that I had found on the Internet to see what anyone had to say about it. Regardless it was bashing or not, the person who wrote this info has his opinions just like anyone else has to right to comment on it.

 

For future reference, you might want to use the quotation feature when you are quoting someone so that it is not mistaken for your viewpoint. In your initial post you said "The most precompiled program in all new computers IS a virus to anyone who knows anything about computers". Initially I thought you were saying this, as in expressing your viewpoint, not just copying it from the article.

As for the article itself, I agree with everyone else that his reasoning is flawed, his point outdated, and his recommendations ill-advised.

They don't replicate themselves and send themselves to others. They're definitely not viruses, just spyware.

I haven't used Norton since 2002 so I can't comment on its present behavior. In 2002 NIS was definitely that bad, except that I didn't have too much trouble uninstalling it. Probably because I ran Win98.

From a Linux user that is probably very true. The only thing stopping me from porting is College work. Now that is all over - i have 6 weeks to try porting to linux

Edit: But that, is completely off topic - and for another forum. On a more "topical" note - the article sucks. And as The Hammer so very well put - so does this thread.

 

Having experience with only the versions up to Norton AV 2006 and NIS 2006 I can't say what the newer versions are like. NAV 2006 and NIS2006 and many previous versions were not good for me. I hear now that 2007 and 2008 versions are much better, but I just couldn't use Norton again. Even the name Norton makes me cringe lol. I am just glad we have so many other AV alternatives to choose from out there so we can find what works best for us. That article is strange though.
