Better couple of these ?

Hi!

My sister have these in her laptop now: McAfee Antivirus Enterprise v8 and Windows Firewall. There are choice to pick Kaspersky Antivirus v6 and Outpost Firewall Pro besides them, which are better choices ? Or is McAfee and Outpost combination suitable ?

My choice would be KAV and Outpost with these options. I would prefer KAV & Comodo or KIS v7 though

 

Can you give more info why ? Yes, KIS 7 can be option in future if needed. These programs should be easy to use (or easy to learn, heh I will do teaching...) and if possible not too heavy.

 

If it was me, I would stick with VirusScan Enterprise and use a router with a built-in firewall. You may want to install the anti-spyware module of it as well if you haven't already done so. VSE is highly configurable and has some interesting features. I wouldn't bother with a software firewall, personally I think they're a waste of time and system resources and just provide a false sense of security. Turning off unnecessary services and using something like Windows Worm Door Closer will help quite a bit as well.

Thanks for suggestions I personally would also pick Kaspersky and Outpost Pro/similar program. Router is a no-go, so that choice is off. She is my sister and it's very hard to convince her to buy or pick anything 'extra', it's better to begin with small steps, not taking huge steps first (after enough knowlegde it's different thing...). Good, basic setup should be enough. How good is Mcafee Antivirus Enterprise (version was 8.0.0) regarding newest threaths and malware ? Will Outpost behave good with it ?

 

I can say from personal experience that, as an example, it stopped the .wmf exploit when it was still "zero day". I know this because I was testing a free version of CA Etrust that came with a magazine and went to a site that I know has a lot of malware. There it got blasted and I had the SpySheriff on the desktop. I re-loaded a Ghost image with VSE and updated and went back there and didn't get infected, it blocked everything.

Since your sister has it installed, take the time to read the help file. VSE has some firewall-like features of its own. There's the buffer overflow protection and you also have some application controls as well. It's worth reading because with these features the Windows firewall would be more than sufficient. It's not a noobie AV, but once you have it set up right, you don't have to mess with it anymore.

 

Detection rate is okay but nowhere near as high as some others.

 

ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7 is a good choice, it uses the engine of KAV 6, and it has a better firewall!
