New User in Vista

I've been using Kaspersky Suite after a couple of years using IOLO (since they dropped Kaspersky AV). But I just saw this add for ESET and wondered: is it really true what they say about the single-agent solution and how superior this is?

I have a new VISTA Ultimate machine. Should I install ESET NOD32?

yeh i say u should.
i normally dont buy software but nod32 I bought and even renewed the license already once. i wouldnt do that if its not worth it.

but then again: ive not met a virus/trojan etc for years ..... sometimes i wonder if virus scanners etc are even necessary nowadays or if its all just a hype from the industry to scare the ppl.

 

I'm running NOD32 on vista (first time for me too) and so far I'm impressed. I hardly know it's there to be honest, except when it updates which is quick and frequent. In that regard I'm pretty happy with NOD32, quality software IMHO.

Thanks for your replies. So, if you get this, what other security software if any do you need? What about the issue of programs that try to load themselves? Does it alert you?

To be honest I've not encountered anything so far, but as I understand it NOD32 will stop anything it identifies as malicious. Couple that with the UAC and I think it's pretty hard to accidentally install something you haven't personally ok'ed. Otherwise I'm behind a router firewall, so I've not really tried to install anything else security-wise (And Vista has it's own FW anyway).

I am toying with installing Zone Alarm for controlling programme access to the web and Spybot - Search & Destroy to clean up Cookies etc. but I'm not really sure they are needed given the low risk activities I use my PC for.

I am no guru with the combination of NOD and Vista, however, I do have that combination together with SAS (free), WD active. Vista FW and I am behind a Zywall router (shameless plug for Zywall ).
I agree with the OP that with UAC (I do not turn it off), I feel fairly safe with no problems (so far... knck wood)

IMO antivirus/antimalware protection is a must nowadays . Although you may be safe user , you never know in which corner you can meet something .

Recently I visited a legitimate site which was compromised by bad guys witout the administrators knowing . NOD32 stopped the threat on time . The site administrators fixed the issue one hour later ( a whole hour) . Many might have been compromised if they had no (efficent) protection even though this is a legitimate place
