Family License almost over, should I renew?

Each year when my license is coming to an end I take a look at the Virus program that I have, and decide if it is work keeping for another year. I have learned so much over the past few years of what to look for in a Virus Program, and with two computers for my family, who go online a lot protection is important. I have had NOD32 on both my computers for the last year. I did get a couple of virus' that got thru the Nod defenses earlier in the year on both computers, but that has happened on all of the Virus programs that I have had thru the years. These are the virus programs I have had the past years going backwards from now. Nod32, Kaspersky, AVG, eScan and finally I started with Norton and McAffee was probably the first AV I used.

Here is what I expect from an AV. To give the best protection possible, which include heuristics and fast signature response and also to be light on my resources. High detection rates in all areas including malware, macro, worms, trojans etc. I am running Vista Ultimate on my 2.4 P4 system with 2 GB of Ram, and on my wife, she has Windows XP SP2 on her laptop, 1 GB of Ram. That one is a Dell.

I look at all the reviews for all the different AV sites. I looked at the AV Comparative site, and their February review has got me a little worried, with it only getting an ADVANCED rating, not Advanced +.

My wife uses her computer for work sometimes, so security is important.

My license expires in 2 weeks, and I need to start deciding on do I want to stay with NOD32 or not. By the way, I use Blackspears setting for both computers, so would that counteract the results that AV comparative did, by all the extra settings I did?

This is what NOD32 offers.

But only once and with 96.7% detection rate which is more than excellent for real world.

In order to high up your protection , use NOD32 , also make sure that:
- Protected mode for IE7 is enabled (Vista only)
- UAC is enabled (Vista only)

Learn yourself and your wife to be safe while on-line . Never download from less known sourses , never visit tricky sites and things like that

 

Also to add to the very good advice from HiTech_boy, when surfing the net use something like Sandboxie. (It's free)

 

IE7's Protected mode will protect the computer very well (at least on Vista)

Sounds to me like NOD32

 

I think av-comparatives has nod32 crippled for the most part - anyone running with Blackspear's settings is a mile ahead of the setup used in av-comparatives imo!

 

New I am on the fence of which program to get. With two weeks left with my 2 licenses for NOD32. I am deciding should I stay with NOD32 or go back to Kaspersky, possibly getting the Internet suite. I know Kaspersky uses more resources, but they have 7.0 coming out within a few weeks, and is said use less resources. Both are great programs, but I need to have the best protection for mine and my wife's computer. I have actually gone to both forums to find out the positives and negatives for each program, of course with each forum, the program people own they defend to the utmost. For me, all I care about is the best overall protection for my computers. With AntiVirus programs loyalty shouldn't be the reason to stay with that company, it should be results.

Any more input would be really helpful, including info of the upcoming ESET 3.0 suite and NoD32 3.0 versions. How will they compare with Kaspersky 7.0. I have to make an investment for the next year and want to make the right choice.

Are you saying NOD32 at AV-comparatives is not well configured? I REFUSE to believe that. Every AV is tested with the best settings. Andreas Clementi knows his stuff.

 

Regarding NOD32. Heuristics is good, AV-test.org's recent tests don't give all THAT good an impression of its detection rates. Kaspersky 7.0 will have a new heuristic engine also, so in that case at least some things are evened up.

In the end, you must TRY for yourself both ESS and Kaspersky 7.0 and see which one is better for YOU. If you speak purely from a detection rate perspective then I would say KAV is better, but there is more to choosing an AV than detection rates. Is the pricing structure comfortable for you? Does it work good? Do you like the support, etc.?

BTW I think this thread should have been in the other AV forums. Because this is a NOD32 forum, meant for support, not comparisons...

 

firecat, I stand corrected - Andreas' test DOES use best configuration - there are other 'tests' which do not...
