best all-in-one suite...pls help...

Hi Folks,

I been trying some AV porgrams off and on this last years....mostly trial versions.

and i want to see what the experts think about a best (if there is any!) all-in-one-suite to protect my comp.
I know i read some topics about this on this site but i wanted to ask the question especialy for my config too....so here it goes!

here is my config:
AMD processor 2400 mHrz (32 bit) Sempron..512 MB Ram
one HD 80 Gigs and one HD 120 gigs.
dual boot Win XP Home edition/Linux Xubuntu 7.04 (KDE runs too heavy for my PC..)
I am behind a US Robotics Router....but still feel the need for outboud control with a software firewall.
I am a heavy user mainly downlaod music and movies.
I prefer a AV/suite thats doesn't lame my system down and i like a software that doesn't wait 7 days (!) with updates to latest virus threats.


for some things i use linux but how ever for certain apps i still have to Use windows XP. (mainly for webcam chatting as my oldie webcam doesn't work under linux)

Personaly I found Trend micro too heavy for my config.(more then 7 processes running....U gotta be KIDDING!!!)..so is Norton....:-(
OOO and did I mention F-secure....a real heavy thing...brought my machine to it's knees...:-( Same with G-Data....them thingies EAT RAM/clock speed...wowwwww
I tried KIS 2006 some weeks ago but for some reason the firewall of KIS messed up my connection...!! Had to de-install and use winsock to fix my internet conection again..!

AV Avira is Good (I like it)...but i don't know the value of their firewall in their suite. Anti spyware options??
NOD32 runs like a charm but i never tried their suite (is there a trial anyway?)

I just don't want to run 3-4 different apps anymore to secure my (XP) machine anymore and want to do that with a handy Suite.

OO Vista issues are not important for me as i am NOT planning to migrate that soon....if EVER!! LOL

For now I would say:

5. BitDefender 10

 

Some of the ones you mentioned, that you had issues with, are really very good. You might want to look at KIS,Norton, AVG, and Avira. I have not heard of anti-hacker messing up winsock, but I guess it can. Forget Eset until it is out of beta. I agree with others that beta products are not intended for machines that you need to really count on. Avira is going to revamp their firewall later this year. I tied to install Pandas Internet Suite yesterday, and it locked up my computer.

My 3, not in order of favorites would be:
KIS
Avira
Norton

Yes that could be a major set back if you don't live in the US or Canada.

 

I don't use suites, but I have heard great things about:

1. KIS...Seems to be the cream of the crop based on user comments in this forum.

2. Norton Internet Security...The 2007 version seems to be a MAJOR upgrade from where this product has been.

I have alse heard great things about Bitdefender, howeverm, the last time I had that program on my PC, it slowed my system down big time and scans took forever. That was a couple years ago though, things could be very different now.

I would advice the KIS6.
The beta 7 is far more fast and smooth but still is a beta. It is possible that bugs will appear

Kaspersky, if ... and only if, it runs well on your machine, the top 3 are all light and ive never had problems with any, dont confuse processes with the 'lightness' of a software.

 

If you must use suite, then KIS 6, but since you're having trouble with it already ...

ZASS would be nice too, except any of the version 7 with anti-virus (including ZA free, inactive av, but still there) is having many issues.

But why limit yourself with suite when you can pick and choose for better combination yet still runs lightly.

I have Avira Free and ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware on my laptop which has 1.5 ghz Pentium M and 768meg of ram, and it runs smoothly.

Not too many people mention this one, but BullGuard 7 is pretty good. The AV is Norman I believe, and the firewall is Outpost. It includes antispam, and a backup utility also. It ran pretty light on my PC. The price is around $60. I don't know if they offer a discount for renewals. The only draw back I found was that you can't run a custom install. I don't really need the backup utility since I have a separate software to do that. Heck I might even give it another try.

 

if I were you , I'd buy a new webcam that can be used on Linux then you pretty much virus free. or use free avast for linux.

You are correct. I just double checked, and it is BitDefender. It was another suite that used Norman.

 

Not a big fan of suites...but would consider BitDefender and AVG...just for starters...I am starting to have more of an open mind as more and more companies go suite way...

 

I tried almost every suite, but KIS is better.

 

Every time I go back to KIS6 still have too much lag surfing with Opera 9.20 and my Sprint broadband PCMCIA card connection. Even when tweaked, still not acceptable to me. It remains the almost same problem with beta. Would love to use it if that were cleared up.

but KIS is a NO-GO area for me....too many issues on my comp (see my starting post)...and NOT becuase of their AV (which i think is outstanding) but because of their clunky firewall IMHO. I have had too much problems with that ....sorry but NO MORE anti-Hacker for this guy!:-(

If i had to use a single firewall theere are way better alternatives out there for that anti-Hacker thing...Zonelabs,Outpost or Sygate just to name a few.
Also the new Comodo was quite impressive imho.

I liked AVG suite,Avira suite and especialy Zonelabs suite...which combines a great AV (KAV) with a great firewall;-) Only thing wich sucked a bit is (IMHO) the not so good Anti-spyware part of ZAS....and some update issues.
Norton,Macafee,Panda,Bitdefender,F-secure,G-Data (scanning my 2 HD's took forever i think!!) and Trend are just too much of RAM eaters for this PC IMHO.Sure if ye have 2 Gigs RAM and a fast machine...it's no prob....but thats not my machine:-(

If F-prot comes out with a suite I will trial it too.....Eset is next on my list to try. I think it's a very good AV.....i am just curious what kindda firewall they use...their own...or something from another brand?

PS: i bought a new logitech webcam today....I will try it..if it runs good on Linux i guess i will only have to worry about migrating my stuff from XP to Xubuntu;-)Linux indeed has so much advantages It;s good to see more and more comps with some kind of Linux distro out there.
