    Windows Update Error Codes

Recently I had to fix IE when I try to download widows update patches I get this error

Downloading Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (update 1 of 4)... failed!
Downloading Security Update for Windows XP (KB896424) (update 2 of 4)... failed!
Downloading Update for Windows XP (KB910437) (update 3 of 4)... failed!
Downloading Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB905915) (update 4 of 4)... failed!

I was wondering If any of you can help me with this

Hi Sam400 - I have merged your second thread with this one since it pertains to the same issue. Please stay with this thread to resolve your problem with Windows Update.

There could be any number of reasons why you're having a problem with Windows Updates....it could be as simple as setting your IE's Internet Options to default settings for the Internet Zone, enabling Active X, or checking your pc's time/clock for the correct dates. Or it could be more involved and require some reading on your part.

You could start with reading through Microsoft's 'Windows Update Troubleshooter' and see if anything there might be a solution:

Let us know how you do.

Hi Sam... one of the very first simple things to try would be to totally delete all temp files, cache, etc. as sometimes the previous attempts to WU could be still in there corrupting/disrupting your current retry of WU.

after that, searching MSs Knowledge Base on WU would be the go as per snap's suggestion.

Also, you *could* try to delete the MS WU ActiveX controller from C:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Programs [pic] and let WU reinstall it. I honestly cannot say if any problems could arise, but I have personally in the past on a former PC had trouble, so deleted all temp/cache/WU ActiveX files and let Windows Update reinstall and it worked, for *me*.
