Win 98SE problem

I have an unusal problem with Nod32 Version 2 on a clients computer running Win 98SE. I have narrowed it down to Nod32, causing directly or indireclty a Vxd error on shutdown and a consquent Protection error on the next startup. The problem goes away when I uninstall Nod and reappears when i Install it. The error I am getting is a BSOD with reference to BIOSXLAT.VXD just after I click on Shutdown or Restart.

At first I thought of a conflict with other software so I put in a New HDD and loaded a fresh installation of 98SE with NO other software. The error still reoccured. I have tried different memory, with and without VGA drivers, BIOS update.... Not sure where to go from here... any suggestions welcome.

Have narrowed the problem down to Amon, when i disable it, it all works ok. Not a good compromise, but it works nonetheless. Will wait for ESET to send me a reply

 

I think BIOSXLAT.VXD was an old BIOS translating driver to allow WIN98 to talk to the BIOS. I would recommend upgrading to one of the more modern OS'es. Aside from that wait for a reply from Eset. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

 

Yes, BIOSXLAT.VXD acts as a go-between for the BIOS and Win9x. I would expect drivers and power management features to make use of this.

Check to see if there are any old 16-bit or real-mode drivers you can get rid of. Do any of the hard disks require BIOS translation utilties to reveal the full size of the hard drive? You may also check PnP and Power Management settings in the BIOS. For example, try setting "PnP aware OS" to "Disabled". This forces Windows to accept the BIOS configuration for ISA PnP devices.

In the System Configuration Utility (the place where you can set the programs you do or do not want to run at startup), I believe there is an Advanced configuration button that gives you access to some rather obscure troubleshooting options. I am not at a Win98 computer right now, so I could not really tell you if any of those would make a difference at all.

I believe that Win98SE had some sort of bug that would shut the hard disk off too soon in fast computers when shutting down. I wonder if it could be somehow related to that. I believe a fix for that is on Windows Update, and a workaround is in that obscure configuration list I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

i know the thread is a little bit old, but i have the same problem here upgraded to nod32 2.5x (german) yesterday - hoping it will solve the prob - but it still exist - disabling imon and all run fine!?
