Wireless Router with NAT Firewall* Windows Firewall *I'm thinking on SPI: it's available, but I didn't enable it yet. I'm not sure about the cons and pros. Tips are welcome!
I voted for 4 firewalls Online Armor - used mainly and at this time on two machines PC Tools and Privatefirewall - from time to time when I want to see what is changed in new versions Filseclab FW - still my favourite "oldies but goldies"...I sometimes comeback to it due sentiment
For third party firewalls I picked Online Armor and Privatefirewall as my Favorites, but I rather stick to Windows Firewall and router firewall for its reliability from conflicks and its lighter then third party.
No surprise. Read: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm#Basic-Firewalls Also, outbound protection and HIPS components of most firewalls/security suites are very poorly implemented, as showed here: x64: http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php#products-ratings x86: http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge/results.php#products-ratings
I don't put a lot of weight in TSA security advice. First of all there are probably many more advanced users of the built in Windows firewall than are probably given credit. Secondly. TSA has an agenda to convince people to install software. And finally TSA has a general policy, minus a few exceptions, of not recommending any built in Windows software. I don't believe their editors, for the most part, are even allowed to recommend built in software, even if it is just as good or better than what they end up recommending.
