You need to take a view what if any of the updates you need. Sony tends to include a lot of programs that are not necessarily needed.

I agree unless it's important driver updates or windows updates leave the bloatware out.OEM tend to load there bloatware on and is evident when you boot it up the first time.

If it came with a recovery partition and no windows installation cd then format is not an option is it.

Sure you can format.....but it will all come back ;)

But I am sure uninstallation must work.

I can mention that I got an OEM from 2004 and it came with nothing but the OS and the needed drivers.
I guess that's not the case today.

I copied my key down and reformatted the entire drive. I think I ended up dropping like... 20 startup processes and quite a few seconds on bootup.

A message keeps appearing saying "Would you like to Try VAIO care"
Vaio care is an application that helps you keep your VAIO computer running at peak performance.

Should I click yes or no?

+1. Get rid off the VAIO crappy software. You don't need it.

I been ignoring this VAIO update stuff since they're unnecessary but today a new message popped up on my screen saying:
vaio update helps to keep your comp tuned for optimum performance..it allows you to check for important notices about your vaio and run the latest updates for your computer. To begin vaio update, please agree the license of agreement and then configure settings..

are these still unnecessary? I'm confused since it said important notices.

Really it's a matter of personal choice what you install. I mostly install all the updates that the update software on my various laptops find. I've never used a Vaio before so I really can't comment on thier updates. But as general guide you'll probably want to install any driver updates found, and for software updates just decide if you think you actually will have use for that software.

Can you view the updates that are being offered or is it trying to install the software service that checks for updates.

I have Gateway Netbooks that came with Gateways own updater that runs a schedule service to check for updates from the OEM that never finds anything.I removed it for one less useless service.

The software should inidicate if it's a driver update.

Would the updates let her know which are useful from least to most with a rating scale? I know some programs do that. Also will they be labeled as security and such so she knows which to do?

No this won't be the case.

I highly doubt there will be any security updates.
