what is this option for?

Hi,

Just saw an option in the setting under Core System Shield. It says 'Prevent any program from modifying the HOSTS file'.

What exactly does it mean?
What will happen if I check this option?

WSA user guide says:
"Stops spyware from attempting to add or change the IP address for a website in the hosts file. It opens an alert where you can block or allow the changes. The hosts file is a Windows file that helps direct your computer to a website using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses."

 

ah! I understand now.....thx a lot ........but does any of the legitimate programs in my or an average user's xp system modify HOSTS file in order to work properly?....if so then WSA would block the program and would cause crashes had I checked the option......am I correct?......

 

I hear your concerns.

I have asked about this function and the reason it is off by default is because some people intentionally use alternate HOST files.

If you do not, you can check it safely for an added layer of protection.

 

I didn't even know what HOST file was before posting here.....so you can see that I don't actually do any of those stuffs.......so you're saying that no other program in my pc need to use the HOSTS file and modify it to work properly....and that I can prevent modifying HOSTS file using wsa without causing any prob?......

 

I am fairly certain that is the case, yes.

If another program does, it sounds like WSA prompts for it so it shall not break a program.

I have it checked because I don't use a Host file such as MVP Hosts or HP Hosts files!
