Vista Ultimate: Removing Windows Defender

Is there any reason I shouldn't remove Windows Defender? I am running AOL AVS on Vista 64 bit and am happy that combined with firewall and no script I don't really need Windoze Duffender.

Does anyone know how to remove it?

Not sure how to remove WD from your computer, I think you can but not really sure how, I would have to check on this later.
You can disable WD completely, through the option menu which is what I did.

 

Yeah found the options to disable. What do you guys think? Waste of resources or am I getting something for the CPU cycles?

Good move. Now go with SUPERAntiSpyware, better detection and removal. I just installed it on Vista Business and it runs well.

 

A waste, yes, something better would be SUPERAntiSpyware or AVG AS.

I dont know if other people using Vista have experienced this problem but there will be a fix for it.

 

Defender is actually a part of Vista now, not just an add-on; and can't be removed in any normal fashion.

Maybe vLite makes or will make it possible to remove Windows Defender. Unfortunately vLite is still in BETA.

 

As others had said already, all you can do is disable it by turning off it's service.

Some AV's, such as Trend Micro and Norton, disables WD during installation.

 

vLite works very well for removing Windows Defender. I am a true believer that Firefox with NoScript makes Anti-Spyware programs worthless.

 

I used to use Windows Defender on my XP system, and did not find it to be particularly effective. Picks up registry changes, services and drivers, etc... but KAV does that too without any noticeable overhead. You are better off without it IMO.

 

I tried to remove it on my ultimate stuffed it up ! Id leave it then again i reformated i hated vista xp runs way better on my new 2gig rig..
