Is there a way I can safely use Java with TOR. I've been researching for a very long time and I haven't really found a solution. The only solution I've found is to run a VM but I don't really understand what a VM is and how safe it really is and it appears to require a lot of setup, am I wrong?

Is there any other safe way of doing it, does VM have other security benefits when using TOR?

    Thanks

if not running tor on an encrypted hidden volume and a vpn with no logging, i wouldnt advise using java with tor but if you must your safest bet would be to use TAILS if your privacy is important to you ;)

In what way does TAILS make it safe to use JAVA with TOR?

I know I know java and tor is a bad idea but I have read around and it seems like it's definately possible. I'm not sure how TAILS helps though.

Thanks, it looks good and I'm downloading the ISO at the moment. Although I still haven't found an explenation as to how this enables you to run java without it exposing your IP. If I run this, does this mean that everything I do within Tails will be completely safe/untraceable (with the exception of the information I reveal ofcourse)?

    Doesn't it require extra/special/advanced configuration?

The solution just seems to good and simple to be true :)

its preconfigured no need to configure anything ;), and all your net traffic while runnning tails will be tor routed so no revealing your real ip
as said if that isnt enough for you just rig your hdds with magnesium plates and kaboom ..voila! lols ;)

p.s : i personally use tor on my hidden os and i have my own customized w7 for this ,much more pleasing to the eye and way more functional , i never let anything sensitive touch my outer volume ;), and since i use a paid vpn without logging i dont need tor for all my traffic wich tails does by default , its enough i have to use tor with the torbrowser its not exactly the speediest lols xD

one more thing without a vpn your isp will see you using tor :)

I was also going to suggest a VM approach, because it's the only way to be sure that no unwanted information will leak. But I would also suggest to research the subject a bit, instead of using ready-made solutions. IMO, the main factor when in comes to privacy is knowledge about the subject, the risks and the way to mitigate that risk.

And if you use a VPN, the VPN provider will know you are using Tor. The main decision comes from who you trust the most: your VPN provider or your internet provider.

So in Tails I can do whatever I want and no IP information will ever leak? I don't understand how that works as I'm still connected with my normal internet.

Also, I can't get java to work, it's not pre-installed and installing it doesn't work, it's making me pretty angry what do I do?

your entire traffic is routed through tor network if you use tails , only thing your isp is gona see is you using tor thats it ;)

about java , i meant javascript , java itself isnt a good idea itll blow your cover ;), if you plan on using java with tor then be prepared to use a vpn and fde with hidden os ;)

Woah hang on a sec.. you mean tail is useless for java but god for javascript? :(

I'm not worrited about my ISP seeing things but I need to use Java.. are you saying there's no decent way around it? (That's relatively simple?)

If it's not possible I guess I would purchase and create my email account all at once using public wifi then use an email client with ssl to access it. Any general tips for that? Is the email client that comes with TAILS any good?

simple? i dont know what you want, its either security or convenience you cant have both and as said it all depends on your privacy needs, and for the love of god DONT use public wifi , for all i care you could run your system without encryption and have java enabled but dont come crying to me once the party van comes a knockin ;), unless someone else knows better please dont hesitate to add in , anyhow bout your email client question , well if it supports pop3 , ssl, imap, open pgp and smtp isnt that all youd need? , i use thunderbird portable on my system with enigmail and gnupg if i need to send sensitive emails i dont want others to have access too ;) , and if your not concerned about strangers checking out your sensitive data then why are you even using tor or thinking bout using truecrypt if i may ask?!, if the answer is privacy then you know what to do ;) , nobody says you have to disable java for regular web browsing its only a bad idea when used with tor on a non hidden volume and regular non vpn connection ;)

p.s: and im just a newbie in this , im not even half as experienced as most of the members on wilders and as you can see even i keep on doing research and collecting feedback from experienced people on the net ;), as nebulus said if you want real security you gotta actually do some homework on it ,if you want REAL security, sure TAILS is a step in the right direction but theres many more aspects to take into consideration as ive mentioned , thou the magnesium plates with igniters option is still up for grabs if theres interest lols ;)

Hehe it's not that I'm lazy I just don't have the time to spend hours and hours researching and learning about network protocolls etc. etc. etc.

I suppose I'll use a vpn that doesn't keep loggs to create the email account (the email client uses java) then wait a while and setup email with thunderbird. Setting up Thunderbird in Tails is easy enough isn't it? And there are no major security flaws is there?

while running tails the only security "flaw" would be your ram lols xD

btw you can "install" thunderbird on tails but itll be gone by the next time you restart your pc , since tails uses ram as disk space ;), thou as said theres an built in email client already in tails that should be good enough , depending on your needs, you have to try it out to see if it suits your requirements ;) , of course all of these are just suggestions, what you do in the end is up to you , as said different people different needs ;)

p.s: dont know for what you need an email but depending on your situation you can use 10minute mail or guerilla mail ,for permanent email id suggest riseup havent come across anything better ...yet when it comes to privacy oriented free email ;)

I don't really understand it though, if Tails routs everything through TOR, then why can't I use Java with it?

I still have the same problem can someone give me a solution? :p

I don't really know where to start in regards to setting up a virtual system.. is that the best solution?

The issue of Java and Tor has been discussed over and over again. The only solutions I am aware of I have posted here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2019581&postcount=11

I actually recommend reading over the whole thread here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=2019581#post2019581
