upgrading from zaf to zap

    i wish to upgrade my zonealarm free v3.7.202 to zonealarm pro v4.0.

    can i simply shut down the true vector engine (unclick load at startup), reboot, and install v4.0 over top of v3.7.202?

    and when asked, i imagine that i choose upgrade rather than clean install?

    again, sorry but i could not find instructions on the zonelabs site for migrating from free to pro.

    From the track record of ZA, I suggest you download it, disconnect from the internet, uninstall, reboot, and install the new version.

    There might be some special instructions to make sure that it was uninstalled correctly, but in cases with firewalls(along with most software), its best to uninstall the previous version first.

    The best method is a combination of what you and BZ said, to ensure the cleanest install of ZAP 4.0.

    What I do...

    1. Uncheck "load at startup" item, as you said
    2. Reboot system
    3. Check in task manager for Zonealarm and/or vsmon.exe running.
    > If they are, it isn't going to uninstall cleanly - let us know if that's the case.
    4. If they are not there, run the uninstaller from Add/Remove Programs
    5. Reboot again, if not prompted to do so by uninstall
    6. Remove any remaining files in \Windows\Internet Logs\ folder
    7. Install new version

    I've never had an install go wrong doing it this way.

    thank you for the reply

    i've had very good success of late installing new versions of zaf over top of existing versions, by merely doing as i alluded to. and i believe that more and more folks are experiencing success in doing it this way.

    but that has always been zaf to zaf.... never from free to pro. so i thought it advisable to inquire.

    sounds to me like 'over the top' would definitely not work.

    i will do as you and BlitzenZeus have suggested.

    thanks for the help. i have three operating systems to do this on, but i will post back with results as they become available.

    i followed your instructions and the install went seamlessly. been running zap4.0 all day on one machine and i couldn't be happier. it's quite an improvement over the free product, though i do not mean to disparage the free version.

    what happens if vsmon.exe IS running (noted in #3 above)? you said to get back to you if it is.

    i have encountered this scenario with someone running win98se, and they are trying to install a new version of za. she apparently didn't realize there was an old version, and is experiencing no success with the install.

    so far i have learned from her that there is no za in add/remove programs. i haven't heard back yet if za is found under programs (and if it is, if the uninstaller is in the folder).

    but she says vsmon is running. i had given her your list of seven steps to follow, and told her to look for vsmon. here is what she said back to me....

    "I did a ctl/del to get the task manager, and Vsmon is listed there (is this not supposed to be there?)

    I did a file search for Vsmon.exe and this is what it said:
    Folder: Windows
    Size: 403KB
    Modified: 4/11/01

    I also did a search putting in True Vector and came up with:
    Vector$1.class 1KB 8/12/02
    Vector.class 8KB 8/12/02
    Could these files be from ZA?"

    so, LWM, i know these are za files. what i don't know is if it's correct to tell her to delete vsmon.exe, since she does not appear to have the gui control center that she can use to uncheck "load za at startup" ?

    Hmm, interesting... So basically, this system has no ZA user interface running, right? No ZA icon in the systray, so no way to control enabling and disabling the auto-start setting from within the program?

    There are different ways to approach this. If I was at the system myself, the first thing I'd do is look for the normal Zone Alarm file locations. Is there a complete install at the default location (or any other):

    c:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\

    Also, the true vector application is located elsewhere. It sits below the Windows\System or Windows\System32 level in it's own ZoneLabs folder. On an XP system, vsmon.exe and a few other related files are here:

    c:\Windows\system32\ZoneLabs\

    If the \Program Files\ part of ZoneAlarm is still there, I'd start the zonealarm.exe program file to see if it still can run. (Note, since we don't know what version this is, there could be a zapro.exe in there, too, and if there is then don't start the zonealarm.exe, start zapro.exe instead.) If it starts, check the setting of the automatic startup box. If checked, uncheck it. If not checked, check it, close ZA, reopen ZA and go uncheck it. That should remove it. Reboot and see if vsmon.exe starts again.

    If it still starts, or if the Program Files for ZoneAlarm are missing, then it's time to start looking through the manual removal instructions from Zone Labs: Uninstalling ZoneAlarm Under Windows 98

    If there is a bad deinstall - missing files or folders, etc - then a manual removal is the only way to clean it up. Perhaps someone tried to manually remove ZA just by deleting the Program Files? Who can say?

    Oh, by the way, searching for "true vector" among the disk files won't find anything related to Zone Alarm since that's just the internal name of the firewall service, not the name of any of the files themselves.

    Let me know what you find...

    Hi Mark - I have no doubt that you have received very good advice from LWM & others here. My install was clean and smooth & my only problem was my unfamilarity with the software.     yes i sure have used the za forum... not as frequently as i have this forum or dslr. truth is, i always get a little bit better responses here and on dslr than on the zonelabs forum.

    maybe i just ask clearer questions here. <g>

    like you, i have had nothing but success when installing new versions of za, or, as recently attempted, migrating from zaf to zap. i like to be very thorough and do my best to get it right the first time, so spending extra prep time always seems to be the key for me... true for installing/uninstalling any software, i suspect.

    unfortunately, i have some friends who are not so lucky with za (interestingly both of these people i am communicating with now on this topic are running win98se), and i'm trying to get them right.
