Iv had NPF 2003 installed on my computer for about a year, well today i bought system works and it came with NPF 2004, so i figured i would update.

    I uninstalled NPF 2003 and installed 2004.

Well now when i have it enabled it blocks every site. The sites say action canceled.

Automatic program control, and network detector is on.

I ran program scan and put everything in there that was about aol, but it still doesnt work...

liveupdate also doesnt work unless the firewall is disabled

any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much.

    Hi J12, :)

    Two quick ones:

    1.You're not blocking svchost right?

2.If I remember correctly 2004, on installation ask you to choose ... foggy here about the wording ... something about choosing "network" connection ... I was asleep at the switch when I was installing ... and choose the wrong option ... so I re-installed in a less lucid state ... LOL ... and corrected the problem.

I would suggest looking through the Symantec site as much as possible until someone can answer your question.

You might want to provide more info on your system here so that people can see where your problem may be.

Check back and see if someone recognizes your problem. Since AOL is a proprietary system, the problem may be there. If 2003 worked, I would go back to that system for the time being. Upgrading any program on a computer can sometimes be a step backwards until all conflicts are resolved.

    Hi J12, ;)

I assume you're refering to NAV auto-protect ... although this is in frequent ... I've experienced this only once ... if the NAV start up is a little slow ... this can happen ... rebooting will correct the issue.

Any luck with the Firewall trouble?

    Hi J12, :)

Just for future reference ... CrazyM (one of Wilders' resident firewall experts) has great reference site for Norton Personel Firewall, well worth checking out! ;) (contributions from several Wilders' experts/mod's - jvmorris, FanJ, BlitzenZeus, and of course CrazyM)

Let's start with fundamental possibilities here.

Now, I stopped with NIS 2002 and I know there are different options in NIS/NPF 2003 and 2004, but first let's review the basic configurations settings just to ensure that there's not something fundamental being overlooked here.

The information in the following graphic is, unfortunately scattered all over the NIS/NPF User Interace, so it may take a bit of hunting to find it. (And they tend to move it about from one release to the next.)

So first, take a look at the attached and let us know what looks different.

The second thing to do is review the first sixteen rules or so in your ruleset. Typically, these are now called General Rules, I believe. (They were once called System-Wide Rules.) You're looking for a rule that effectively
If you find a rule like this, especially up near the beginning of the ruleset, that's probably your culprit.

  21. During or immediately after a failed Internet session, open NPF Detailed Statistics and also the NPF Log Viewer Firewall Log, and you may be able to find out the names of the Rules that automatically blocked your connections and your applications from accessing the Internet.
Then start modifying them or at first just unchecking them one by one and see if it helps.
Do not disable the whole Firewall completely because you are then exposed to all mallicious attacks from the Internet.

    Ben-Zion,

We're going to have to get you to break down and register! ;)
Yes, these may help, but there are some qualifications.

Regarding NIS/NPF Detailed Statistics, especially the Firewall Rules pane, there is a possibility that something may be detectable from there. However, there are two kinds of BLOCK events that don't show in that listing: Implicit Block Rule and Unused Port Blocking. These, of course, should show in the Log Viewer's Firewall Event Log. The second problem with the NIS Statistics is that the count is not necessarily reliable once you get past the General Rules at the top of the list. This was first noticed in NIS 2002 Pro, and has continued into NIS/NPF 2003/2004. (It's related to all the proxy servers that Symantec subsequently introduced.) Now, unfortunately, it looks as if they've retrofitted this 'feature' into NIS/NPF 2002. :( Still, at the beginning of the ruleset, the counts still look credible as one can see from the attachment.

With regards to the event log, it only lists events for which logging is enabled, of course. In a situation like this, what I typically do is invoke event logging for every rule that I can find that has a BLOCK action. And, as noted previously, the Implicit Block and Unused Port Blocking events are going to be logged automatically.

I ended up reinstalling it in safe mode, still the same problem.

I ended up installing the default rulesets, this fixed it.
Im guessing when i reinstalled it the rulesets stayed the same for some reason.

Thank you all so much for your help i cant say it enough.
