Hello Forum. A question about Port Explorer please, which I downloaded a few days ago and am >this< close to purchasing.

A couple of weeks ago I left a DU Meter stopwatch running overnight. I could have sworn that when I woke up it said there had been an UPload of 25 megabytes or so, which seemed rather strange.

In retrospect, I may have been mistaken about the upload (I've seen no such thing since), but it caused me to start playing with tcpdump on my Smoothwall firewall machine, and then with Wireshark (formerly Ethereal as I understand it), and one or two others on the PC (XP Home SP2 up to date). Now I've downloaded Port Explorer as I mentioned.

My regular security suite is Kaspersky Internet Security 6 plus Windows Defender. This seems fine but, as always it seems, isn't perfect and doesn't do everything. (I've got some other programs I run from time to time, too, like PestPatrol, SpySweeper, Spybot and Ad-Aware), and some others I think are good but which have fallen to disuse because they seem to conflict with KIS (or maybe my machne just doesn't have the oomph to run them together).

I like what I've seen of Port Explorer. I've read the manual and various things I've seen here and elsewhere on the Internet. Seems to have a decent reputation, and seems to work well on my machine. But I can't seem to get it to do what I want to do.

What I want to do is spy on a process that kicks in from time to time and then is gone. It's an OK process (the power quality reporting feature in APC's PowerChute UPS software), and I'm just using it for practice with Port Explorer. When the UPS is activated it lets APC know what type of event it just reacted to. Having an interest in power quality myself, I'm happy to let them have that anonymous information.

Each time this program activates, it gets logged in Port Explorer's process log, but I can't seem to spy on it because every time it is activated it gets a different process number. I've tried manually putting in the process name to the spy list, but that doesn't seem to work. I think Port Explorer reacts only to process numbers. Is that correct?

I know I can just spy on everything and then try to find what I'm looking for, but that's defeating a big purpose of Port Explorer, no?

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks! Steve

I just purchased the product, but only because something went wrong with the trial and I wanted to keep on playing. I would have preferred to stay in trial mode for a while longer.

I rebooted my PC a while ago, after which Port Explorer said I had either used it more than 50 times or for more than 30 days, neither of which was even remotely correct.

Just a heads up for any DCS folks on this forum that there may be something to fix.
