Slack is unveiling a big redesign to its communications app that starts rolling out today to make things a lot simpler to use.

“This is the largest redesign in Slack’s history,” explains Ethan Eismann, vice president of design at Slack, in an interview with The Verge. “We’ve taken a lot of the historical features and reorganized them in a way that makes them much more apparent in the right way and simple to use. That was very much the goal of this process.”
Slack’s new redesign all starts with the sidebar. The biggest change is that messages, channels, and apps will all now support grouping into collapsible sections within the Slack sidebar. [...] Unfortunately, the new sidebar sections feature will only be available on paid Slack plans, not free versions.

Elsewhere, Slack is also getting a lot of minor UI changes to clean up channel details panes, menus, preferences, and even an increase in spacing throughout. It should all add up to a Slack app that feels a little easier to use and is less cluttered.

It’s certainly interesting (and bold) timing, given the increase in demand that online services are seeing right now.
Slack is pushing ahead regardless, and new users can expect to see the new UI starting today. Slack is rolling this out to new users first, thanks to the increase in remote working and to avoid people new to the app having to learn different versions. Everyone else will start to see the new design showing up in the coming weeks.

Slack and Microsoft Teams are two of the biggest enterprise communication tools out there, and the two services have developed a notable rivalry over the past few years. However, last week, Slack CEO announced that the company was working on an integration with Teams to allow users to make voice and video calls using Microsoft's service.

However, Teams is a direct competitor to Slack, and it's not like Slack doesn't have its own calling capabilities, so it's certainly interesting to see this integration happen. In the past, Slack's CEO has pointed out that the majority of Slack's customers also use Microsoft 365, which might help explain the decision.

Slack is silently testing a new interface in the latest beta version of the app for Android. Though the changelog for the release doesn't mention it, the UI has received a serious overhaul, with an iOS-style bottom navigation bar replacing the old side slide-out one in what the company calls a "simpler, more organized Slack."

The biggest visual change is the navigation bar, which, unfortunately, isn't pervasive throughout the entire app in the current test. The Home section, which is essentially your channel/DM navigation screen, gets its own tab, rather than living in the slide-out menu, as it used to.

Given a couple of small things still seem to be in transition, missing, or non-functional as of this latest beta, I wouldn't be surprised if we see further changes on these UI changes with a later update. In the meantime, you should probably start adapting to the new navigation system.

Slack’s new iPhone app hits the App Store ahead of official launch

Slack announced a redesigned iPhone app with a new navigation bar at the bottom of the app in update notes today. However, it seems the redesign is still rolling out, even if you’ve updated to the latest version of the app — myself and another Verge colleague don’t have it yet, for example.
The new look appears to bring the iPhone app in line with the Android redesign that rolled out on May 5th.

“Previously, it was complicated to get to the four main things people do on mobile,” Slack said in the App Store update notes
If you don’t have the redesign yet, it seems likely the update will be available more broadly soon, since Slack has laid out all of the new features of the update in the App Store already.

Slack Connect furthers the idea of shared channels that let companies collaborate, allowing up to 20 organizations to work seamlessly together with apps, chat, and more. [...] it’s launching for all paid plans today.

“The vision for Slack has always been to build Slack Connect so that the benefits you get for channel-based communication within your own organization you’ll get when communicating with everyone,” says Tamar Yehoshua, Slack’s chief product officer, in an interview with The Verge.

If Slack is successful in convincing businesses that it has the answer to their communication needs, it certainly looks like another step in reducing tedious email threads and even meetings between companies.

While Slack started off in a battle to kill your own workplace email, the greater war is eliminating emails between businesses. Slack now wants to be seen as the communications tool of the future to achieve that, and it’s a war that has just begun.

Slack will soon let anyone DM each other. A new Slack Connect direct messages feature will launch for businesses in early 2021 that expands on the idea of shared channels, and allows employees to directly connect with people from other organizations. If you’re a Slack Connect user, you’ll be able to share a private link with other Slack users to direct message you.

Slack has been building towards this ease of messaging between businesses for months. Slack Connect launched back in June, is designed to let businesses large and small collaborate together through shared channels.

“You could put a link on your Twitter profile or a QR code on your business card that people could use to connect with you,” explains Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield in an interview with The Verge.
“It works essentially like BlackBerry messaging, so that link is the equivalent of me giving you my BlackBerry PIN but when you message me I still have to approve you,” says Butterfield.

Slack is also enabling a new verified organizations feature early next year, that will provide a checkmark for trusted businesses. It’s designed to make sure channel invites are from verified organizations, rather than verifying individuals like Twitter does. Slack is working to bring a few new features to the collaboration offering, including an Instagram-like stories feature and the ability to communicate with channel members via audio using a push-to-talk system.

The format of stories isn’t new and had expanded from a more casual, photo-sharing app-specific feature to professional setups like LinkedIn. The executive says that the feature will be “very much like Instagram stories, or Snapchat stories, but in Slack”.
Butterfield also acknowledges that the changing dynamics of work warrant the need for such “ideas”.

The firm expects users to leverage the stories feature not for sharing leisure content, but for sharing status updates or some form of video briefings, remotely. The company says that the feature is still in the prototype phase and shared a concept image of how it expects the feature to look like.

Another feature that the firm is working on is an ‘instant talk’ audio communication capability. While the company does not offer extensive video calling or conferencing capabilities like other collaboration tools do such as Microsoft’s Teams, it aims to provide an easier way to conduct short meetings or discussions between users without having to schedule separate meetings.

The executive says that these features are in the prototyping stage and that they are expected to make it to the offering “some time this year”.

Not long after Steve Wood joined Slack in June, as a VP of product for its developer platform, he had a sort of an epiphany. Slack, it turns out, is really good at what Wood calls "events." An event, in his world, is any moment that matters to a business: a lead comes in, a server goes down, a sale is closed, code is committed. Lots of companies use Slack to talk about these moments and to figure out what to do next. But Wood wanted to do even more.

At its Slack Frontiers conference, Wood announced new features for Platform users, like the ability to roll out a new app across an entire organization and an increased security profile for enterprise apps. Ahead of his keynote, Wood explained his vision for Platform — and for Slack's future as more than just a place to chat with co-workers.

The other thing Wood is working on is making it easier for people to build these apps and workflows in Slack. He spoke proudly of the fact that 175,000 people have built workflows for Slack, and 77% of them are classified as "non-technical." Slack's now working with Zapier to bring its huge library of integrations into Slack, too.

But remember: Slack is trying to kill email. And the only way to kill email is to kill the notifications, the status updates, the "something happened" notes that clutter too many inboxes. If Slack can move those into Slack, and make them a little smarter, that's one less reason to ever check email.

Slack has announced a new Scheduled Send feature that the company is starting to roll out today, which — as the name implies — will let users schedule messages to send at a later time and date.

The scheduled send feature adds a new drop-down arrow to the green “send message” button in Slack’s desktop app. Clicking it will reveal a new menu that allows for scheduling a message to send to a room, direct message, or group thread later on. Mobile users will be able to access a similar menu by long-pressing on the send button in the Slack app on Android and iOS.

“Today we launched Scheduled Send to empower users to communicate and collaborate in a way that works best for them,” the company announced in a statement, explaining that “teams shouldn’t be obligated to sync their schedules in order to communicate effectively.”

Slack is putting its prices up in September, alongside some big changes to its free plan. It’s the first price increase since Slack launched in 2014, but will only affect users of Slack’s “Pro” plan. On September 1st, monthly Pro subscriptions will increase from $8 to $8.75 per user per month, and annual Pro subscriptions will increase from $6.67 to $7.25 per user per month.

Slack is also making some big changes to its free plan. Currently, free Slack servers show the last 10,000 messages and up to 5GB of uploaded content. From September 1st, Slack is changing this to show the last 90 days of messages and uploads, with no limit on how many messages have been sent or the amount of uploaded content.

“The majority of our active free teams will have access to more of their message history with the new 90-day limit compared to the previous limit,” explains Slack in a blog post. “No matter how much your free team uses Slack, you’ll always have access to 90 days of history.”

Slack’s free users will also get access to the Clips feature that lets users send audio, video, and screen-share messages in channels and DMs. Free teams will also now be able to set a retention period for their messages and files from September 1st.
