Should I upgrade to Version 9.0? Or stay with Version 8.0?

    hi all,

I have just bought a retail box of Acronis True Imaage Version 8.0 from my local store...and there is a card included that says I can upgrade to Version 9.0 for FREE!

but after reading the threads in this forum, it seemd that Version 9.0 is still not "stable" yet, my question is:

    1. if I created a image of my C drive with Version 8.0, can I use it with Version 9.0 for the recoveryo_O

    2. Version 9.0 and 8.0 any difference?? is Version 9.0 stable? Bcos I am thinking of upgrading to Version 9.0 BEFORE I create my full image of my C drive...

am still a new user, and playing around with this software..
so far I have just created a "Full image of windows xp w/o any software)
" image of my C drive (only have 1 C drive)

    1st:
1 FULL image of Windows XP without any software

    2nd:
1 FULL image of Windows XP + Windows Updates SP2 + All Stable softwares

    can anyone pls advise?

If version 8 is working for you, stay with it for now. Does the offer to upgrade have an expiry date? BTW, be sure to try a restore to see if it will actually work. And since you say you have not added any software, now is the ideal time to try it.

As an intermediate image, do one with just ALL the windows updates including SP2 - no software.

If version 8 is working for you, and you don't need any of the other features in 9, I would stay with 8. In fact, I got a free upgrade to 9, and tried every build since it was released, up to the one right before this current 2302 build, and I had problems with, and got error messages, using all the 9 builds. I gave up being a free beta tester for Acronis with my only computer, and I went back to using version 8 build 937, and am happily using that without any problems.....maybe after a few more builds to get more of the kinks out of version 9 I will try it again. All the reviews of what a great product Acronis True Image is were of Version 8, not Version 9. Version 9 has had problems since its release, and by watching the forum, there still seems to be some problems with it. Good luck!

    hi Chutsman,

well, as in the card did not write any expiry date, so i think there is no expiry date for the upgrade? anyone pls correct me if i am wrong.

and yes, i did tried the restore (no other software), and it works perfectly!
so i think its in working condition yeah!

as for the windows updates SP2, its bcos that my comp does not have windows xp sp2 installed by default so i got to be online to download the sp2 updates, and by doing so i will need to install my firewall software in order to go online (dangerous to go online w/o firewall)...so thats why i created a Full image of my c drive w/o windows xp sp2 updates...

or maybe i will email Acronis to check about the upgrade offer then...

anyway thanks, i think i will be staying with ver 8.0 for the moment..

    Hello mimijo,

Why not just take advantage of the free upgrade offer? After all you don't have to install TI 9.0 at this point in time.

Just register it at acronis.com and, when you feel a particular Build is stable, download the appropriate update and give it a try. You can always restore your TI 8.0 created full backup image if you hit a major problem.

    Regards

I Would Keep Using True Image 8.0 (Build 937) It Is The Most Stable Version And If you are worried about losing Your Free Upgrade, Get The Upgrade And Register True Image 9 As Instructed But Don't Download Until The Forums Show A More Positive Review For Version 9.0

I went back to using 8. I have and 8 and then I upgraded to 9.0 only to have several problems that nothing seemed to help. I deleted 9.0 and re-installed 8.0. I am going to keep this until I hear that the bugs have been worked out.

hi all, once again thanks everyone for the feedback regarding the upgrade offer...

BTW, I have my current Acronis True Image 8.0 installed in my comp and the build is (Acronis True Image 8.0 build 826)...

but seems that everyone is using Acronis True Image 8.0 build 937 while mine is only version 8.0 build 826 (box version), I have just registered with Acronis, but in the webby there isnt any version 8 build 937 available for download....only version 9.

can anyone please kindly tell me when can i download the version 8.0 build 937 updateso_O

    thanks!

Well, you need to check again. Now that you're registered, you should have access to the latest build of TI8, that being build 937.

After you log in at https://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/ , you should see "About my Account" in the right half of the display area. Below that will be a list of 7 links in blue. Click the 4th one, "Product Updates". That should get you to a screen where you can select the link in blue that says "Acronis True Image 9.0 Upgrade (English)" and then click "get update".

If you're not getting this, I guess you need to contact support.

    Good luck.

The key difference between v9 and v8 is the Files & Folders backup capability.

<snip> that functionality is so fragile.

from the partition imaging stand point, v9 is still doing exactly what 8 did. i don't see any problem there. <snip>

so i would keep away from v9.

yes, i did click on the "product updates" after logging to the webby,
and i click on the "get update" but the download file is "Version 9.0"
    not Version 8.0 Build 937...

and there isnt any other link for updates, seems like I can only
    update to "version 9.0"o_O

    thanks in advance!

It would mean you haven't registered TI 8.0 but TI9
You can go - without logging in! - to acronis.com ==> Support ==> Product Updates
There you see, the latest version of TI8 is 937. On the bottom, there is link to login and if you have registered that version, you get it!
At least for me, they are not offering TI9 instead :D , and if they do, you should probably contact support.

Doh ! I should have described that link as "Acronis True Image 8.0 (English)" !

Hopefully, you got past my typo. with a minimum of confusion. My apologies for that.

Anyways, if you bought version 8 and registered version 8, it seems like you ought to be able to download the latest (final) build of version 8 -- I know I can.

On to contacting support would be the next step, IMO.

well, I have contact Acronis support regarding whether the FREE upgrade to version 9 has any expiry date but in the meanwhile I going to stay with version 8.0 until version 9.0 is more stable...but i like the features of version 9.0 being able to choose backup folders & files...but too bad its not stable yet!!!

But there is NO RESPONSE from them yet, what a SLOW customer service support they have! Acronise please be more responsible if you are still thinking of running the business, if not due to the current version 9.0's problems, you got to lose ALOT of royal customers!!!

and according to my registered version, its written "Registered Version: 9.0" when I log in to the webby. But hey, mine is Version 8.0 build 826 (box version), and I registered using the Serial Number written in the card provided. But instead, it registered mine to version 9.0. (i hope you get what i mean).

I think there is nothing i can do now but to wait for their reply...

    thanks everyone!

mimijo, one more thing: When the Acronis support rep here at the forum catches up and reads your thread, they'll definitely be looking for the 6-digit issue number that was assigned to your support request, so you're a step ahead if you also post that so they can expedite your issue.

My local store has version 8 on sale. I'm trying to figure out whether to buy it.

    I have two systems...

One has SCSI hard disks running off of an Adaptec 2940U2W and 29160 with a SCSI Yamaha CD-R/W.

The other system has standard parallel ATA-100 IDE drives and IDE CD-R/W.

I also have a USB hard drive with MULTIPLE PRIMARY FAT32 partitions => Western Digital IDE drive in a box with a Cyress AT2 bridge circuit.
(That's why I'm posting my question here.)

Can the boxed version 8 allow me to make a Bootable CD that will allow me to

both Backup and Restore Images of Disk Partitions and/or the Whole Disk

to the USB drive partitions creating files of 680MB size

so that I can archive them onto CD-R's and restore them from those CD-R's?

Can I verify those images on USB drive partitions during or after creation against the original disk/partition, (NOT just a checksum)?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Hello Gehst,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Yes, both Acronis True Image 9.0 and Acronis True Image 8.0 allow you to create\restore images of SCSI hard drive (either from under Windows or when booted from Bootable Rescue CD) to\from external USB hard drive.

Please also be aware that since the new version has several new features and most of the known problems of this version has already been investigated and fixed, I would recommend you to use Acronis True Image 9.0.

As for the image verification process, please note that if your image archive verifies successfully by means of the embedded Check Archive tool (Check Image tool for version 8.0) then it can be restored without a problem.

I recommend you to download and install the free trial version of Acronis True Image 9.0 to make sure that the software works fine on your particular software\hardware configuration.

You can find more information on how to use Acronis True Image 9.0 in the respective User's Guide.

Please visit Acronis online store to purchase the full version of the product.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

    Thank you.

    Dear Alexey,

Thank you for your reply. I asked my questions in two places because there were several issues, one being multiple usb partitions recognition seems to be problemmatic in version 9 and another being that version 8 seems to be regarded as stable and version 9 seems to still be a work in progress. In consideration of your request to limit posts to a single thread per issue I will post my response here only.

I understand from a corporate perspective the need to move on to a new product and refine it technically, but since the version 8 product is still on store shelves in a significant amount, I think your company still has an obligation to purchasers beyond asking them to update to version 9. Please do not misunderstand. I appreciate that you have a rough job, fielding a lot of annoyed users and I appreciate what you do here.

I may be under a misimpression, please correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe that the trial version of your product does NOT allow a prospective customer to create and/or restore a backup with bootable CD. How can I tell if your product will work for me if this feature is shutdown in the trial version. This is why I posted questions rather than downloading a trial version. I figured that asking users of your product would give me firsthand experiences that I could use to guide my purchase decision.

A user already expressed difficulty with having the multiple partitions of their usb drive accessible in version 9. This is why my question referred specifically to version 8. I was hoping some users would tell me whether or not the same problem exists in 8?

I also asked if the backup files being written to USB could be sized at 680MB so that I could burn them off to CD and archive them. Could they at later time be restored directly from the CD?

Also, I wanted to know if the program has the capability to compare the data of the backup image against the original disk either during backup image creation or immediately afterward? This was a feature of Drive Image 2002. Sadly Drive Image 2002 does not support NTFS versions later than Windows XP without any service packs. The type of verification you wrote about is an integrity check ( a refined version of a checksum ) and only tells a user if the Image file has been corrupted. It does not tell the user whether the image matches the original hard disk data.

Also, can version 8 successfully access my SCSI CD-R/W drive for read and write operations?

Thank you in advance to all folks who reply.
