Postmates lands first-ever permit to test sidewalk delivery robots in San Francisco

On-demand delivery business Postmates says it’s been granted the first-ever permit for side-walk robotics operations in the city of San Francisco.
According to San Francisco Public Works, the permits are active for 180 days and authorize the testing of up to three autonomous delivery devices. We’ve reached out to the Public Works department for comment.

China’s EHang, a company focused on developing and deploying autonomous passenger and freight low-altitude vehicles, will build out its first operational network of air taxis and transports in Guangzhou. The company announced that the Chinese city would play host to its pilot location for a citywide deployment.

EHang, which was chosen at the beginning of this year by China’s Civil Aviation Administration as the sole pilot company to be able to build out autonomous flying passenger vehicle services, has already demonstrated flights of its EHang 184 vehicles carrying passengers in Vienna earlier this year, and ran a number of flights in Guangzhou in 2018 as well.
In addition to developing the air traffic control system to ensure that these operate safely as a fleet working in the air above the city at the same time, EHang will be working with Guangzhou to build out the infrastructure needed to operate the network.

The Department of Transportation's Advisory Committee on Automation in Transportation (ACAT) hasn't been active since it was formed in 2017. And it won't be active anytime in the future, because according to The Verge, the administration has quietly killed it without even telling its members.

Most of the members The Verge talked to said they weren't informed of the group's dissolution. One of the members, Duke University's autonomy expert Missy Cummings, told the publication that the group's shutdown was "egregious, because [the] board does not have a political leaning. If anything, the board has been pro industry."

The Queensland government launched what it's calling "the most advanced automated vehicle in Australia" on Tuesday morning, completing a six kilometre trip around suburban streets in Brisbane’s south without driver intervention.
The $1.5 million, purpose-built Renault ZOE2 completed the trip at level four on the automation scale, where the car can travel fully autonomously, but a human driver can still take control if needed.

The car was granted a permit to allow it to be tested on predefined public roads in the suburb of Shailer Park under the supervision of engineers, but had previously undergone extensive off-road testing at the nearby Mount Cotton Driver Training Centre in the lead-up to Tuesday’s demonstration.
The car’s top speed was also significantly reduced from the non-driverless version of the car, down from 130km/h to 50km/h.

The road trip paid particular attention to how autonomous vehicles adapt different kinds of lane markings, traffic lights, street signs, and the limitations of GPS systems.

The UK government has launched a £2 million feasibility fund to encourage businesses to develop methods for testing the cyber security resilience of autonomous cars and their supporting infrastructure.

The ultimate goal is to be able to use the research to define a universal testing facility used to determine whether autonomous cars have enough hacking resilience to be allowed on British roads.
The £2 million will be divvied up between a maximum of five research projects, each eligible for a maximum grant of £400,000 and must cost between £50,000 and £800,000 to complete.

This report that connected cars have Internet connections leading to safety critical systems which are open to a fleet wide hack. UPS has had autonomous trucking startup TuSimple hauling cargo for it between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, since May as part of a newly publicized partnership between the two companies. The delivery giant made the announcement today alongside the news that its venture arm is taking a minority stake in TuSimple. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TuSimple says it has been helping UPS “better understand the requirements for Level 4 Autonomous trucking in its network” — a reference to the Society of Automotive Engineers’ scale for self-driving vehicles, where Level 4 refers to full autonomy that’s locked to a designated geographic location.
The trucks in use still have a safety driver and an engineer on board who monitor the system, like many of the other self-driving pilot programs currently running in the United States.

Postmates has officially received the green light from the city of San Francisco to begin testing its Serve wheeled delivery robot on city streets, as first reported by the SF Chronicle and confirmed with Postmates by TechCrunch. The on-demand delivery company told us last week that it expected the issuance of the permit to come through shortly after a conditional approval, and that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday this week.

The permit doesn’t cover the entire city — just a designated area of a number of blocks in and around Potrero Hill and the Inner Mission, but it will allow Postmates to begin testing up to three autonomous delivery robots at once, at speeds of up to 3 mph.
The competitive field for autonomous rolling delivery bots is growing continuously, with companies like Starship Technologies, Amazon and many more throwing their hats in the ring.

Volvo’s concept for this type of future is the 360c, which completely removes traditional driving controls and imagines a space where passengers can work, relax and even sleep.
Inside, the 360c is like a business class cabin on a plane, complete with a fully reclinable seat that acts as a bed when it comes time to sleep. The problem is, three-point safety belts aren’t practical when someone is lying down trying to get a good night’s rest.

Volvo’s solution is not a belt at all, but a blanket. It works through a subtle system of straps woven into the blanket that are “loosely attached” to the surrounding structure of the car, which cocoon the passenger without feeling restrictive. If there is a sudden impact, the safety blanket restrains the person from their legs to their upper body.
Ekholm notes that if all vehicles on the road were fully autonomous, then they would all be perfectly in sync with each other and there would be no chance of an accident.

First publicized by a Reddit user, Embark trucks with the Amazon Prime logo emblazoned on the side are making their way along Interstate 10, delivering cargo for Amazon Prime.
Despite motorists spotting the trucks on I-10, neither Amazon nor Embark would comment on the vehicles or what services were being provided.
Are Autonomous Trucks Safer?
Self-driving trucks won’t suffer fatigue the way a human driver will. They also won’t text or drive while under the influence, or cause accidents due to driving while distracted.
Decreasing or eliminating human error as a factor in semi-truck crashes could potentially save thousands of lives.

Waymo is taking some of its autonomous vehicles to Florida just in time for hurricane season to begin testing in heavy rain.
The move to Florida will focus on testing how its myriad of sensors hold up during the region’s rainy season as well as to collect data. All of the vehicles will be manually driven by trained drivers.

Waymo will bring both of its autonomous vehicles, the Chrysler Pacificas and a Jaguar I-Pace, to Naples and Miami, Florida for testing, according to a blog posted Tuesday. Miami is one of the wettest cities in the U.S., averaging 61.9 inches of rain annually.

Yet the prospect of actual, commercially available flying automobiles has always seemed to remain just out of reach, only a few years from viability. But even as drones become commonplace, are we really any closer to an age of aeronautical automobiles than we were in Ford's day?

No firm is putting more resources into getting its service off the ground than Uber. The ride hailing company is adamant that it will have a fleet of air taxis in operation by 2023, dubbed UberAir.

"I think we can't underplay how much of an impact Uber has had actually creating a platform and pushing it," Mike Stewart, Honeywell Aerospace VP of Engineering, told Engadget. "I think that's generated a lot of buzz."
But if the goal of establishing a viable commercial air taxi service in the next 4 years [...] seems a bit ambitious, that's because you're correct. This industry is still in its infancy and faces a slew of technical, regulatory and infrastructure challenges.

It'll be quite some time before we're hopping on VTOLs for our LA-Vegas jaunts. In the meantime, Muthukrishnan is confident that we'll find plenty of use for these aircraft in the congested hearts of urban centers.

"In the black cars, during peak hours, it takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes," at a cost of anywhere from $75 to $200. "If you had short vertical takeoff and landing, you could do that for $50 in less than 10 minutes."

If you’re like me, and I’m just going to assume most of you are, motion sickness is a serious consideration on any car trip where you’re not driving. So what are we supposed to do in self-driving vehicles? Researchers are finally looking into this question with an experiment designed to see just what makes people like us so sick.

The study, at the University of Michigan, was undertaken because the researchers realized that if millions of people can’t read or do work in autonomous vehicles, that massively reduces the draw of using them in the first place. And it turns out there has been almost no investigation of why certain people get motion sickness in this context, what makes it better or worse, and so on.

“Very few studies have been conducted in cars; instead, a lot of the work has been done for sea and air transportation modes, performed in driving simulators or on motion platforms,” explained lead investigator for the project, Monica Jones, in a university news release.
