Computer Associates, maker of security software, has announced their anti-spyware program PestPatrol will detect and remove Sony's rootkit-enabled DRM software.

Four pests from Sony have been added to PestPatrol's new definitions slated to be released this week.

The only problem is you get soooooo many FPs with Pest Patrol, how would you know what your detecting is the real thing (e.g. Sony's rootkit)......or just another FP?

I may assume Pestpatrol is not making any mistakes with the "hot" ;) Sony Rootkit issue....

Would be very bad PR, isn't?:D

As a general rule PF are very bad PR, and Pestpatrol has a problem with PFs. So why should the Sony Rootkit detection be any different. It would be nice if they did get it right.

I don't know specificly about Pest Patrol, but most of the removal tools that came out to fix the XCP rootkit don't actually remove it. They only decloak it. From the one who discovered it:
    http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/11/sony-no-more-rootkit-for-now.html

Either use Marks removal methods, which is pretty advanced, or use Microsoft Antispyware or visit Windows Live Safety Center to remve it. Note that the DRM software will remain, but the aries kernal driver and rootkit will be killed. On December 13th, 2005, Microsoft will include the XCP rootkit removal with the Malicious Software Removal Tool through Windows update.

I wouldn't go out and buy Pest Patrol now, since you can get full removal for free now.
