I may be mistaken, but at first glance it seems to me it's using the KAV engine?

What makes you think so? Are you trying it out or did you find some screenshots?

The virus naming they use, the similarly named files (some of the files even say "Kaspersky Labs" on them) in which they keep virus records, and also looking at the number of viruses it detects it's very close to the number that Kaspersky has.

EDIT: I tried the trial and it runs ok, even detected some junk on my computer. (I ran it together with NOD32, and it also flashed up with a warning on the junk that PC Tools AV found)

Yes, its definitely using the Kaspersky engine, because whenever you read some of their virus descriptions, there is a link that says 'Read more', and this link directs you to http://www.viruslist.com which is of course, Kaspersky's virus info site. ;)

BTW it seems its using the KAV 5.0 engine ;)
