PC-Cillin 2003

Hi Ladies and Gents,

I'd like to thank you all for the help you give us newbies. I just recieved a copy of PC-Cillin 2003 from where I purchased my computer. I know that a lot of people consider the antivirus portion of the program as one of the good ones but what about the firewall? Seeing that this firewall is a rebuild from the ground up and not one imported from 2002 (which I had read was weak as far as firewalls go) do any of you have any ideas or opinions on the 2003 firewall incorporated in Pc-Cillin 2003? Will I be relatively safe or should I use a different firewall? Thanks for the time and the help.

First of all, I trialed PC Cillin in March of this year. Although it was the 2002 version, I think most of my opinion would also apply to the 2003 version. I read through an information pdf file at the trendmicro site. I would not say that PC Cillin is a great virus scanner. Don't believe me? Check http://www.virusbtn.com and you'll see that PC Cillin is basically awful at "ITW" detection. The firewall doesn't look any different from the 2003 version, versus the 2002 version. I was VERY unimpressed with the firewall. NO Provision for oubound filtering, unless the nasty is in their database. I suggest you go to www.pcflank.com and test the firewal. Then please post your findings. I will not install PC Cillin in my computer...

I read a review of PC 2003 in a danish computer mag.
They liked it very much, but i think that it mostly was for the looks.
The magazine is a mainstreame family mag, and it doesnt seem as serious as other mags.
But as straigth Shooter said, try to test it on pc flank.

 

Thanks for the help guys. The firewall passed some of the tests at PC Flank but not all. That was all I needed to use the antivirus as a backup on demand scanner only. I'll stick with my purchased copy of Kaspersky Personal Home Pro 4.0 since many consider it to be a good antivirus. For the firewall I'll keep my copy of Oupost Pro that I purchased a year ago. It never gave me any problems and I felt more secure with that than the Pc-Cillin anyways. I just wish Agnitum would update there product as often as others especially if they know that there are some security issues with version 1.0 and/or features that people need of their firewall. But for now it does all that I need for it to do and I'll wait for the version 2.0 to hopefully come out soon. Thanks for the advice, guys.

 

Yeah, I just uninstalled Pc-cillin anti-virus from my pc after using it for about 2 years; they MADE me do it. Not really, but I asked them if I could renew my license without purchasing the entire 2003 suite with firewall, etc. They said "No", I would have to purchase the entire thing. Heck, even Norton as big and bloated as they've gotten will still sell you, if you want it, just an anti-virus and then renew it for you. Too bad, I did kind of like Pc-cillin but I LOVE my new anti-virus, NOD 32. It doesn't slow down my pc or surfing at all like Pc-cillin did. (I guess I owe you a word of thanks, Trendmicro). I feel compelled to give you a couple of tips...

1. Uninstall PC Cillin 2003, totally. Do a search of "trendmicro" or "PcCillin" and delete everything you find after you uninstall everything...

2. Clean your registry (if you can) of trendmicro and pccillin

3. Stick with Kaspersky..

4. Stick with Outpost...

You may want to try NOD32 for an anti virus..
I use that, with ZoneAlarm Pro 3.5! It's a very good combination.. I also have Pest Patrol ver 4, for spyware, and trojans...I used to use Agnitum, but ZAPRO 3.5 is beautiful after ZOnelabs fixed some kinks, and updates are pretty frequent, more than Agnitum.. I have been hearing about Ver 2 for about 6 months,, I will stay with ZAPRO

Thanks for the tips. I did exactly as you said, first I unistalled Pc-Cillin, then I searched my hard drive and registry for "trendmicro" and "pc-cillin". I installed Kaspersky and then I installed Outpost. No problems at all. One question though, I disabled Outpost temporarily and installed a trial version of ZoneAlarm Pro 3.5, very nice interface and seems very stable as I have not had any problems with it yet, is it as secure as Outpost in your opinion? I'm considering purchasing it if it's as stable as Outpost seeing that ZoneAlarm performs as well as Outpost on all of the scan sites that I visited and it also does what Outpost's plugins do, in that it blocks ads, popups and scripts. Thanks

p.s. I know this is the firewall section of the forum and my apologies for being a little off topic, but with Kaspersky as my antivirus, can I still install an antitrojan? Seeing that Kaspersky is better than most antiviruses in detecting trojans, I still would feel safer with either Pestpatrol, TrojanHunter or BoClean. Any suggestions? Thanks

 

Jumping. I have a few suggestions and at least one answer. I am currently using with no problems.

AV = KAV Personal 4.0
FW = Sygate Pro 5.0
TD = TD3-3
AW = Spybot Search & Destroy

I personally would not run more than one FW or AV program on the same system to avoid conflicts, but I have read of or had any problems with trojan scanners effecting my FW or AV apps. What I would say is that I would steer you away from PestPatrol. I speak from experience because I do have PestPatrol and have used it. Why should you avoid it? Let me count the reasons...

2. It doesn't update enough. It is not uncommon for Pest Patrol update once a month! My current TD app updates almost every single day.

But Bioclean sounds like a winner for most folks. TDS-3? Well it can be tedious but it seems to be the best at what it does and it updates almost everyday and extra usefull tools. Heck there is a forum on this board for it...

Also, I think you made the right choice with sticking with KAV 4.0, for me it is great because it is also better at scanning compressed (ZIP) files than Norton and most other AV apps. Which is a must for P2P. Also, I wouldn't trust Norton or McAffee after their stances on gov sponsered trojans.

 

Straight Shooter, Luthorcrow and everyone else, thanks for the help and advice. I decided to buy a copy of ZoneAlarm and keep Kaspersky (for now!!). I did try out Nod32, quick little thing (scanned my pc in minutes). I'll probably purchase a copy of it as soon as my Kaspersky license runs out in February. I found ZoneAlarm to be as good as Outpost on all security sites, but I'm still waiting for Outpost v2.0 to come out and give that a try. Again, thanks for the help.

Straight Shooter, are you pointing inconsistencies in posts or what?

Cool tidbit on the NOD32. Sounds interesting from their webpage. Have to admit I had never heard them before. A quick Google search turned up this review which also made me feel better about my choice of AVP(KAV). What had turned me onto that program was a comparitive study of AV apps by Hamburg University. Things to consider as I am up for renewal early next year. And, I have to admit KAV is a resource hog on start-up.

Kapsersky has a website that should win an award.. They have the Viruslist encyclopedia, and the whole site is pretty interesting to waddle through and read. I just prefer NOD32 because it's simple, and very light on resources.. Kaspersky s the 2nd best in my opinion...
