The sopftpedia article contains the half true.

The other half is written in the report:
    The samples are not representative.....

I'm not sure it makes much difference.
The only bias is that not many "normal" home users will be included in the data set.

At work corporate users sit behind endpoint protection, but at home most become regular users again.
In my experience because people have serious protection at work, they are often a bit clueless with security on their own systems, and so equally likely to have Norton installed at home, either because it came pre-loaded, or they were tricked into buying it after using the scanner distributed with java and flash installers.

I am guessing due to the rise in BYOD that various IT departments have required that users install OPSWAT clients, and that some users desired the same AV at home anyway.

The install rate of Norton and Mcafee only ever indicates how well their marketing and distribution is working.
On that basis all such comparison studies are flawed.

ESET? Maybe it's bigger in Europe or Asia, but I have never seen/met anyone or company in the US that uses it.

With some folks, McAfee has (in my opinion) an undeservedly poor reputation despite consistently high marks on comparative tests of its effectiveness with respect to protection and performance. I am glad to see that it ranks fairly high on OPSWAT's report.
