Opera --> New Stable Version Released!

I really hope Opera add the features which made Opera great. at this time I am sticking with 12.16
I keep trying the newer versions of opera as they come out but so far I am disappointed. If opera do not add their features back I hope someone develops a browser with the feature set opera had once opera stops supporting 12.16

I think the only way that will happen is if someone forks Opera #12 series.

 

What won't happen unless Opera release Presto code and because they want to succeed with their new Opera we cannot count it will happen soon, if at all. Starting from the scratch where Opera 12 ended (without having available Presto) is unrealistic, imho.

I feel the same way. When I'm searching for answers on the web I click so fast but 99/100 I find what I'm looking for. With other browsers when it comes time to do some fast & frantic browsing it feels like mud. All the little Opera 12 & under gestures are ingrained subconsciously & every other browser just plain sucks. I tried getting FF, chrome, Chromium, Dragon, Iron, Melon etc. to respond like Opera. They just won't. Losing Opera 12 to obsolescence is painful. I'm switching a muscle car for a bicycle.

 

Just installed 17 Final and at least it is working where 16 was Rinse Lather and repeat...

Still don't like the changes.
I made me a local Bookmarks page that may help me live with it.

Good point. I wonder if Opera ASA will ever release the Presto code. If they did, I bet someone would develop it.

 

Opera opted for a suicide by changing itself into a chrome clone. Why one will use Opera if the original chrome/ chromium is there.

I don't think so. Opera 17 may need some development, perhaps some more functionality, but it is blisteringly fast & has some good extensions. I actually prefer it to Chrome.

I agree it's a bit of a clone, but it doesn't mean that it will be inferior to Chrome. Pretty soon most browsers will be Chrome clones anyway. I'm expecting the 'clone wars' to start at any time. LOL!

 

Well, a browser is more than just the rendering engine. If the folks at Opera Software don't add anything other what is in Chrome or your basic browsing features, then yes, it would be a clone.
However, if they add unique features or simply a lot of them (more than any other browser, like it was thus far with Presto), then it would no longer be a simple clone.

I don't know what path they will take. So far it seems they are trying for the latter (although it does seem to take ages) and I *REALLY* hope that's the case because Opera has been my primary browser for many years and I do *NOT* want to change.

P.S.: now that I think about it, if Opera can deliver the same features, I won't mind the different engine. Presto had a lot of potential, no question, but at the end of the day what is most important to me is that pages load correctly and I have all the features and interface I am used to.

 

Engine doesn't matter if they keep developing features they had with Opera 12. It isn't a Chrome clone just because they use the same engine. I agree they should have waited with the release until they had more of the old Opera features in by release, but they're working on it. And Opera 17 I must say is a lot better than Chrome, and it's only getting better.

 

What set Opera apart was not the engine but the features.
By loosing the features it became just another Chrome based browser. If Opera will make it an original proposition again is an open question; but I have my doubts considering they are much more focused on the mobile market. Fastmail going alone again is just a sign of that.

 

I feel opera is a little speedier than chrome. When I use chrome pages take some time to load (and this is the case with all chromium derivatives except opera) and in chrome there are messages in the taskbar like loading proxy script, establishing connection etc when the page takes a longer time to load. But in opera pages load almost instantly.

 

I tend to agree. It could be that Opera is actually now using the Blink engine. Although I'm not certain about this. Either way, I prefer Opera 17 to Chrome.

 

Chrome has been going downhill for awhile now. Its performance has become quirky enough that I've just switched back to IE as default in frustration. I think there's an opening here for Opera. A lot of the features of old Opera were nothing but excess baggage for the majority of users. The lack of bookmarks is a major shortcoming, though.

 

I installed Opera 17 to check how things changed from V12 (I was not a regular user but I'm familiar with the browser) and I was appalled! There's nothing left from the old Opera, not one single vestige of what made it different. They couldn't had made a more thourough cleansing if they intended to (they didn't did they?).
For myself that use a FF based browser (Palemoon) because of its configurability this thing is totally useless, not even a bookmark option. The bookmark add-on on Opera extensions? Compare it with Firefox's default manager... and this is just one example.

I think that there is a lot of truth in this. I would prefer a bit more customising ability, but it is still really being developed. Plus Opera ASA appear to be listening to user feedback, unlike Google who just seem to change things because they can, usually not for the better.

Opera claim that the decision to drop traditional bookmarks was through their research into user habits. It doesn't bother me much, but a working bookmark toolbar would be ideal.

It is only a bug fixes update, no new features were added.

 

I'm amazed they taking so long to add back bookmark support, I mean every other browser has it & all the other chromium based browsers have it as well.

They seems to have removed all the code for it to push the speed dial they have, getting the feeling they are just hoping that folk will forget about bookmarks.

Was always a fan of Opera, quick & easy to customise, was always my default browser till about v7 when they made some changes that affected how I used it, never bothered with the mail client in it.

Have periodically tried the new blink versions, it is quick but I miss the more advanced options they hide & also bookmarks.

 

I agree. No Bookmarks is insane to me. At times I've had 300 Bookmarks. The lowest I go when I weed them out is around 150.

 

I wonder how hard could it be to add bookmarks functionality.

I am beginning to wonder if they have no intention of adding one, but hope that in time people will "find they no longer miss it" as they think their research suggests.

Meanwhile I have moved on to Firefox and am liking it.
