Need Help Imaging a USB Ext HDD on LenovoT61

hi everyone and here's hoping for an answer. i looked around the different threads and i did not see a remedy. my apologies if i miss it.

i just purchased a a plain vanilla Lenovo T61 with winxp pro which has its own rescue and recovery clone methods as well as a hidden partition.

i was using acronis true image version 9 and it has works like a charm on my old laptop's (winxp home) while using the apricorn usb external hard drive. now that i just purchased the new T61 i cannot get acronis true image to work with the usb external drive.

i have my bios set so it automatically goes to USB first when booting up.

when i am using ATI boot using the CD for booting up and the usb external backup drive is installed.. ATI goes on but it does not find the C preloaded drive.

when i am booting up the normal way (without the usb external hard drive installed) and when the T61 finishes booting... i will install the external usb hard backup drive. now it identifies the usb drive. but i unable to image it.

so is there a remedy? i sure hope so.

It sounds like TI 9 is too old to support your new notebooks hardware when booted from the TI Recovery CD.

The easy solution is to upgrade TI, but check to see that you have the last build of TI 9 first.

New hardware often requires new software. The only alternative would be to make a BartPE or VistPE boot disk.

 

No special bios positioning is necesssary unless your external drive has been modified to be an Acronis Bootable Rescue Hard Drive; otherwise, the bootable CD will find the external drive itself. Windows will not boot from an external drive--unless (maybe) highly modified to perform such a chore--if it is possible...

Undoubtedlyl, your Lenova has a drive which is newer than your version 9. I have seen on some posts that it just takes longer for TI to find some of the drives.

Try using normal positioning in your bios (floppy-cd-hd) and simulate trying to do a backup. Maybe you can coax TI into seeing your system drive.

Do you know what type hard drive is installed in the Lenova (IDE or SATA)?

If the latest build doesn't solve the problem, please try booting with "acpi=off noapic" parameter as it is described in Acronis Help Post.

We recommend you to download and install the free trial version of Acronis True Image 11 Home to see how the software works on your computer. thank you for all your replies. sorry for the delay.

i cannot tell you what was the main cause of the problem but i think there were three.

first: as you mentioned- it was an old version. i downloaded the trial version of version 11. it worked. the new version using the boot disk could find the missing external usb drive.

second: windows xp pro o/s is configured for ide drives. the lenovo uses the sata interface. they were not compatible with each other. once they were made compatible everything went well.

three: perhaps the usb drive itself is the problem. it is getting old and needs to be replaced. one time using the newly made v 11 boot disk, i noticed the program found a sector problem and could not identify the usb drive. also after few retries rebooting... the usb displayed the drive twice. this gave me an idea- to use two usb drives and see what will develop. actually it worked. only the proper drives were shown. this happened twice and it worked twice. also i realize this sector problem only occured with the same ext driver, not the other ones.
