That is a problem with the majority of brands of PCs. It is certainly not specific to Acer computers.

Lenovo does a good job of providing software and driver updates for their ThinkPad laptops. But, that is an exception. I've seen many ASUS laptops, and only on about two of them has the included live update software found any updates.

Good news everybody. The computer store fixed the laptop and it's like new. The first thing I have done is creating an image backup with Drive Snapshot. I have configured the system to my preference and I'm back in the game.:) I'm never messing with drivers, registries or any of the system settings again. I'll make another backup file after updating all the software and system.

    Nightmare!

USA still the best. But barely.
    Glad you're sorted.

What specifically did they do? And how much $?

Nice to see that your Nightmare was gone. :)
Good decision indeed: "I'm never messing with drivers, registries or any of the system settings again".
I do not windows update even; only when I see that I need to do that (e.g. a software request).

I would like know that also.

They installed the system fresh, just like when I bought the laptop with all the bloatware as well. The funny thing is I had also formatted and installed Win 8.1 fresh from the installation CD and updated the system as well. But that didn't work. It cost me nothing as the laptop's warranty got it covered. The laptop is only 7 months old.

If you encounter any troubles with a driver, before you go to update it, what sometime need not solve your issue, try to uninstall the botched driver in Device Manager and then use option "Scan for hardware changes" (under Action in the menu of Device Manager) and reboot your machine. It will reinstall the generic driver. In my case this procedure proved to be successful a couple of times. Keep in mind, updating drivers isn't always the best option.

Thanks for the advice. I'll remember it.
