It would've been awesome if Microsoft had invested their money into Prevx. It'd be a great combination instead of Webroot doing it.

As far as I can tell, it will perform the scan no matter what as long as your computer is on, if you uncheck it.

 

Do you fellows experience MSE 2 being lighter compared to the first version/first generation?

To me it was heavier.. In terms of ram usage anyway. The current release uses 80mb on my system. On the same system the 2.0 beta uses 90mb.

For an antivirus that uses outdated technology that is way too much. Compare it to entire suites that have signatures and heuristics ( which is the only thing MSE really has) plus tons more features that only use 15mb-30mb of ram. It's just not acceptable.

 

well systems now have at least 2GB of ram or more. and 80meg really isnt nothing at least for me.

 

Was that a joke..? It's "outdated" technology makes it surpass many paid-for AV's in detection that can use less/more resources.

I guess it is funny how Microsoft can catch so much malware with so few false positives with their "outdated" technology

 

Version 2 is like night and day compared to version 1, that is just a plain fact and anyone who says differently is full of crap.

I have been told by a couple of good friends that version 2 is almost untouchable from their stand point. I will leave it at that but for me, that was all I needed to hear. "Brick hitting my head."

 

now, correct me if I'm wrong, but we can't download the straight 2.0 installer from microsoft? do we need install the 1.0 and then the update later?

 

version 2 is in beta. Out maybe by years in but most likely first quarter of 2011. I hear one more new module may get added soon.

You have to sign up through Microsoft Connect to try the beta.

But I will tell all now, no predictions for me for 2011. Hitman Pro won 2010 rightfully, and MSE Version 2 will be Product of the Year for 2011.

 

This latest beta is by far their best effort to date. I have actually switched my beloved Avast 5 over to MSE, I like it that much.

Anybody know what the best settings would be.
I'm not paranoid just reasonably cautious.
Along with MSE beta, I use Prevx W/SOL and Sandboxie paid version.
When I'm in the mood I also use Hitman Pro free.

I installed the MSE beta 2 and it is still version 2.0.522.0.

It seems to take longer than the older version to do a full scan. For me it's not an issue.
I'm thinking I'll keep it long-term since I didn't plan to switch from MSE anyway.
I like the options in the settings!

Always best to do a clean install but it will upgrade to beta.

 

When you install the beta it asked me to upgrade, so I'd say no, don't bother uninstalling.

That is still the latest "overall version". Components and the databases are updated via Windows Update (with Update Now available).

I believe that the behavioural subsystem database is still being built. ThreatFire performs this purpose and is compatible with MSSE (at least through this release).

I am using Windows XP sp3 and the on-demand scanning is very slow. I believe the final version will scan more quickly on "Windows 7". In the meantime, the Quick scan is very quick.

There is no point scanning inside archives or scanning downloaded files. Files are not dangerous until they are executed and archives are not dangerous until the contents are executed. The possible exception is Java Jar files (Zip archives that are expanded and executed in memory). I wish they would add this option.

Most modern antivirus programs modify the contents of downloaded data if it matches a signature. This causes instability in the TCP/IP subsystem. The MSSE philosophy is to download the files first, then scan them. There are hooks in MSIE and MS Office that are used to scan downloaded items before they can be executed. That is the most important advantage of MSSE over most commercial systems.

Note: It looks like MSSE 2.0 will use the Microsoft Filtering Platform in Windows Vista or later. Unfortunately, this platform has three patches that MS does not distribute automatically (and apparently does not intend to). It is a good idea to install the hotfix in that article, especially if you see programs increasing in memory size.
