hi all, just bought webroot spy sweeper. Previously I was only running Giant anti spyware.

Is there any advantages of running both together or should I disable Giant?

Giant as in Microsoft Anti Spyware. [MS took over Giant and it's become MSAS].

Personally and this is just personal, I would run MSAS with Real Time activated as my main AS app, and use Spysweeper as a scanner backup seeing as you have already purchased it.

MSAS has a very high score from everything I have read/reviewed.

Have you tried AdAware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy? Both are highly recognised in this particular field and Spybot has a built in RT scanner [TeaTimer].

But as to your original ?, I would prefer MSAS over SS in Real Time. I did have MSAS on another PC and I liked it, but not on this PC, would not run very good for some reason.

Just run both, see if any conflicts, in the end it ultimately up to you what suits your PC, as MSAS did not suit this one I am on at the moment.

I currently use AdAware PRO with AdWatch in RT plus Spybot as a scanner, and also Spysweeper which I got a good while ago, but I very rarely run that one now, just to see if it does pick up something new or see if any false postives. 99.9% of the time, nothing.

    Cheers, TAS :)

Giant (before MS) and Spysweeper both seemed to get good ratings in various tests.

If they both use rootkits to 'hook' processes, there is a risk of conflicts that might lead to both programs missing something if they run in real time.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how you can find out if they both use rootkits!

IMO Spy Sweeper is the better choice, but it's up to you.;)

Just use one in real-time. I would opt for MSAS in real-time with Spy Sweeper on-demand scanning only. Over a period of time, say three months, If you find Spy Sweeper is picking up things that have got past MSAS then i'd swap. If you decide to try Spy Sweeper out, then disable the ActiveX guard as this will seriously slow down your pc if enabled.

I found it was only good for picking up spy cookies and new startups. Forget intercepting spyware. My experience with it showed it is one of the worse. You'd be better off running one of these four - Spy Sweeper, MSAS, Counterspy and Spyware Doctor. I used to use Ad-Watch with Spy Sweeper on-demand. I regularly used to detect things with SS that had got past Ad-Watch. I ditched it in the end and haven't even bothered to install Ad-Aware Plus on my new pc i got 8 weeks ago.

    spysweeper real time

I've owned spy sweeper for a while. In the past I wouldn't have considered running it real time. I've recently tried it in real time and it seems much more refined. It still can't handle a large hosts file but the rest of the shields seem, for me at least, well behaved. Webroot has put signifigant time into evolving their product. It might be worth a try. New versions are coming out regularly.

    Re: spysweeper real time

A large host file cause almost always problems, so this is not only related to SpySweeprr.;)
