"word on the street" ....rumored that Trillian instant messenger version 725.....calls "home" at start-up

I can't verifiy this because I don't use instant messengers.........so can only suggest that trillian users keep an eye on their firewall activity........an please advise others here if this "rumor" is in fact true.

Well one way to find out involves a packet sniffer and a lot of time.

start logging packets, start trillian, stop trillian, stop logging packets, analyze.

It may be hard to distinguish between logging into the network and "calling home".

Any takers? I did it last time with that site.

In the Basic Options section you have the option to check for updates on load and also to send anonymous usage statistics.

I obviously have these two unchecked.   ;)

I used to have Trillian (Nice girl, go anywhere, do anything  ;) ;) ;)) but it kept coming up with my Adaware and Trojan Hunter Scans as "suspicious" having multple file endings. I wasn't using it as much so I removed it. I recall someone ranting back in February of this year about their anonymous usage stats and the program reporting back. Not anonymous at all? Glad I got rid of it! Caveat usus. Let the user beware.

I'll put it like this - if you can either

    (a) prove that Trillian actually sends back information when you do not have "Check for updates on load' or 'Send anonymous usage statistics' checked in Preferences/General/Basic Options or
    (b) if you can run a successful attack against me via Trillian (my ICQ # is 42210568 and I have it open most of the time)

then I'll believe there's something wrong with the program - until then, it's been the best and most secure IM program I've ever seen and used, freeware or otherwise. Pete
