Well, here we are again. Mickey said it well and with good humor in another thread concerning the new IE security problems. (Good little ditty there, Mickey!)

Why do we put up with this crap? I have been seeing the new Mac OS X every day now for a couple of weeks as the department head just put one in his office.  I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I am. Almost all security patches are from - you guessed it, Microsoft. I just went to a Mac forum and apparently this latest patch doesn't include the IE for Mac. It seems many Mac people stay away from it anyway. They recently just went through a big patch for Microsoft Office:mac ....good 'ole WORD files!

I have never had a Mac, been around a Mac, or had any desire to have a Mac - until recently. I read with interest David Coursey's little experiment with using the Mac for a month after being badgered by readers to try it. He used a Mac years ago but just didn't get the faithfulness by Macsters. Coursey, by the way, is Executive Editor of ZDNET's ANCHORDESK. Long story short: It's now been FOUR months and he's still using it and LOVES it! He wrote a good series for ZDNet (a PC oriented website). If you want to read it, you can find the set of articles concerning his "experiment" at
    http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2861735,00.html

After seeing it up-close, I am dead serious about trashing Windows completely. The OS X is as stable as they come. It is built, in case some of you don't know, around the Unix core. Some have described it as "Unix inside, Mac Outside"....the only problem with that description is that the Mac interface has changed dramatically as well, and all I can say is WOW! It makes Windows and having to click here to go there to click this tab to find this click box and then re-boot look absolutely silly. I can see why Mac people can be so obnoxious sometimes. It is truly a far superior OS and I understand for the first time their bewilderment at why we put up with all we do from Microsoft.

Software? Commercial software is not a small selection, but you don't have nearly the choices as you do with Windows. However, check out the Mac Shareware/Freeware sites. That very fact about commercial products has Mac shareware developers staying very busy and OS X has them cranking out programs at a dizzying pace. You'll find some damn good security software too at nowhere close to Windows prices.

This latest Microsoft thing with IE has just about done it for me. I am seriously considering, as are possibly millions of Windows users, doing something we never thought imaginable - Going Mac. And as David Coursey ( a former editor of PC Magazine (!) ) says on Anchordesk - once you go Mac, you may NEVER go back.

John, where's the challenge?  What's the Mac got that'll make the blood boil and force users to spit venom in the direction of Redmond?  What's my motivation for this scene, man?

Hi, Checkout...It's been awhile. Hope all is well. It's one of those things you would have to see. HOWEVER, as Apple has one of the best and most functional websites on the web, they happen to have an OS X page that is FULL of info that will answer your questions. There are some quicktime movies, slide shows, etc of OS X in action as well. I was showing it to Trace last night and besides being impressed with their site, she got a good idea of what makes the OS X special. That Jaguar update is really the talk of the Mac crowd right now. Suppposedly, there will be some kind of (still secret) support for Windows programs and more features.  You can already partition a disk and format it for Windows with OS X. Virtual PC comes in all Windows flavors as well if you have programs you just can't live without.

    Take care my friend,

What I don't like is the "Nanny" attitude of Apple, whereby users are protected prevented from seeing the wheels turn or the ratchets from clicking.  Frankly, I'd rather have M$, where at least you can see that it has warts and you can see when they rupture. Key, enter, pus, Aargh! kind of thing.

Let's face it, who the hell writes third-party security software for the Mac?  Who the hell wants a system where third-parties can't bolt-on their own magic spells?

Technodrome, With all due respect, your post didn't make a bit of sense to me. That's like saying, "Ford Sucks," or "Chevrolet Sucks," or "Pepsi Sucks." The obvious question is why post something like that which makes one ask whyo_O?? Maybe that's why you posted that, to get the question. Otherwise, I found it a pretty worthless post. Those kinds of posts always make me think of scribblings on the walls of High School bathrooms. I've seen better from you.

Checkout, Actually you'll find A LOT of third-party security software for the Mac. Third-party programs of all kinds for the Mac are exploding due to the large commercial developers sometimes passing the Mac over. What made you think there wasn't anyone writing third-party security software for the Mac? Of course, with the Mac there is also not as much to guard against as the compromised and vulnerable Microsoft Windows.

I'm not sure I fully understood the "nanny" thing.

Mac advocates always say there is plenty of software but there just ain't. And when there is it is twice as expensive, just like the computers themselves.

That being said, I have heard good things about OSX by people that have Computer Science PhDs and who's opinion I respect. (university instructors). People who have also historically hated Mac. They are die-hard UNIX gurus mostly so that explains it.

I'd try OSX for sure if I could run it on a PC, but alas, I don't have $5K to throw at testing it out. So instead I try out Linux distributions. Linux is also a Unix derivative, and a more mature one. Linux comes in many flavors, and 90% of the software is free. The emulators available now (not free) can run MS Office and Photoshop BETTER than windoze can.

    Dear luv2bsecure

When I said that MAC SUX I meant it and still mean it. I'm even wearing T-shirt with MAC SUX written on the back.

People are saying that Windows Sux and IE is Crap and yet using it. Their opinions are worthless to me…You might find it useful and that is ok.

I took liberty of saying that MAC SUX and that was my personal opinion. Does it make me stupid or smart?

You might find that MAC is better then PC, and that is alright...It might be...

My friend has MAC with OS 9, to use some new apps he had to upgrade to OS X. To me this SUX. Even apple home made applications are of no use if you don't have OS X. They are forcing you to OS X. Believe me they are worse then Microsoft.

luv2bsecure do I have to always make sense ? I don’t think so pal!

I think you've gone into Blaze mode for a moment, Techno!  Didn't follow this argument at all!

    Technodrome,

Really.....Can we just stop it right here? If you read my original post, it wasn't a "Windows bashing" post.

I commented in another post that I think a post (especially from a Global Moderator) that simply says, "Mac Sux" without maturely explaining (as Checkout and Unicron did, by the way) WHY in a nutshell that "Mac Sux" is not helpful to the thread.  I am not a "Mac person"...if you read my post, you would see that I have never been around a Mac until the last few weeks. I thought I was writing something that made for a good thread with the latest Windows/IE problems. My post that opined that, in the context of the thread, that "Mac Sux" was a lame and flame-like post was necessary because it's that kind of high school-like cliche stuff that throws an otherwise good thread off in a flaming direction.

Many people have seen OS X and have been impressed. If you have strong feelings, as you obviously do, about the Mac, then tell us WHY.

Your last comment about "Do I always have to make sense? I don't think so pal." Well, yes, I think the forum members expect a Global Moderator to have some sense of decorum and make sense when they post.

Can we just stop here and go on with the thread? If you read my original post, my guess is you could offer some good insight into your opinion on your dislike of the Mac. I have read many of your posts and you add a lot to Wilders. But, I really don't think that particular post was your finest moment. No problem! Let's move on from here. I honestly would like to hear pros/cons on Mac and OS X in particular.

    Regards,
    John

I realized that I never wrote again about the availability of security software for the Mac. This is something I have been looking into. I really think a lot of things may have changed since many of us last looked at the Mac. I know OS X has many talking and it is said to be spurring a blizzard of third-party developers to put out some very nice stuff. Also, you'll be surprised how many programs we use for PC in security is now available for Mac.

Here are a few links as examples - The first two go directly to the security selections....

and another to just compare -

I totally agree this topic should move on....

Once again I'll say that MAC sucks (personal opinion). In Realty,MAC OS X is a nice operating system, but it is only nice because it possesses a UNIX kernel. Other than that, MAC alone sucks.... I must admit that mac (apple) makes very good hardware...

This is totally Obvious. People are stupid when they think that move from Windows to Mac or Linux will make them more secure.

It is true that Windows is more targeted by hackers and virus coders cause Windows is the most used OS system. That figures!

Still waiting to hear WHY from Technodrome that "Mac Sucks" --- and I mean it! I want to know! If it sucks, I don't want to buy it! Give me a one through ten list as to how Windows is superior to Mac -- and maybe more importantly, how Mac is INFERIOR to Windows. I really am serious -- if you know something about Mac and especially OS X that I haven't heard -- I want to know!

    ----
    Pete:
"EXPERTS EXPLODE MAC IS SAFER MYTH......

To viruses, yes. To the other ten million exploits - no.
    ----

Seriously, nobody can deny the mac platform (and again remember, I DON'T USE A MAC!) is a much more stable and much better designed platform. There are not too many who could deny that.
    ----

Liking the Mac for all "the perty colors" - now there's a reason to pick a computer! Don't be silly. Anyway, have you seen the new iMac?
    http://www.apple.com/imac/
Cool looking, yes, "perty colors?" HARDLY.
    ----

C/Net compared the Mac OS X and Windows 2000 and put them to a "battle test"
    http://www.cnet.com/software/0-429669-8-6112332-1.html

The C/Net decision is at the link, but here it is:
    CNET's decision: Mac OS X

Color us shocked, but our panel of seven judges delivered a solid victory to the revolutionary Mac OS. We couldn't overlook the Mac's legendary installation ease and its smooth hardware integration--most notably, digital video media such as cameras and video cameras, thanks to its FireWire support.

Yes, OS X harbors some serious software compatibility shortcomings. But OS X's industry-wide standards and Unix core will likely deliver the same variety of Mac apps that Windows now enjoys. In the meantime, OS X has power and compatibility where it really counts.

Nobody says the Mac is perfect, only that it is FAR superior to Micro$oft Windows.

    Security Page For Mac:
    http://beta.peachpit.com/macsecurity/toc.html

Please, TechnoDrome, instead of generic slogans like "Mac Sucks" PLEASE tell us all 1. 2. 3. 4....Just  Ten Reasons WHY you believe that to be true. I am looking at buying (like hundreds of thousands of other fed up Windows users) of switching to OS X and would like to hear the cons --- because frankly --- so far, I haven't read any...none....anywhere. (Besides the fewer software titles, which to me isn't a problem because I have found SO MUCH shareware and freeware that more than make up for the big companies sticking to Windows software.)

Techno, PLEASE, in all seriousness, offer some helpful information to us that are thinking of going Mac! You must have some pretty strong reasons to wear a t-shirt with that "Mac Sucks" phrase. INFO, please!!!!

    Thanks!!!!

    John

Read this and see the table! It pretty much explains.

P.S. I am wearing this t-shirt cause I got it free from my friend. I am not Windows addicted user or MAC hater. I just don't like MAC.

Reading the thread and it's not very interesting. It could be though if there was that list someone mentioned. You know I have given thought about an iMac and I don't hate Windows. It just interests me.

Mr. Blaze, one thing is for sure. The Macintosh OS X is not simply for the looks. It has Unix at the core. Hardly just eye candy.
