Image for Windows - Image to Blu-Ray Disk

I just installed my new ASUS BW-12B1ST SATA Blu-Ray Burner. I wanted to see how long it would take to Image to Blu-Ray Disks compared to Image to DVD+R DL Disks.

Terabyte Image for Windows version 2.66

Windows System Partition Used Space = 11.234 GB
'Standard Compression' Image File Size = 7.335 GB

1. Image Windows XP Pro System Partition (Internal Samsung 5400 RPM SATA300 Hard Drive) to Backup Hard Drive (Internal Western Digital Black 7200 RPM SATA300)

Image Time = 7:30
Byte-by-Byte Verify Time = 3:42
Total Time = 11:12

2. Image Windows XP Pro System Partition (Internal Samsung 5400 RPM SATA300 Hard Drive) to ASUS SATA Blu-Ray Burner (Philips 6X BD-R Media)

Image Time = 13:48
Byte-by-Byte Verify Time = 6:50
Total Time = 20:38

3. Image Windows XP Pro System Partition (Internal Samsung 5400 RPM SATA300 Hard Drive) to ASUS SATA Blu-Ray Burner (Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R DL Media)

Image Time = 41:44
Byte-by-Byte Verify Time = 12:33
Total Time = 54:17

The Blu-Ray burner seems to be burning the Verbatim DVD+R DL media at a much slower rate than my EIDE Lite-on DVD Burner. Maybe a future firmware update will fix this slowness. The Lite-on normally takes around 25 minutes (Image only) to do the same burn. The Total time for the Imaging process (including byte-by-byte verify) to Verabatim DVD+R DL (EIDE Lite-on DVD burner) usually takes around 40 to 45 minutes.

Two different media and speed

The speed of Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R DL Media is very slow as it speed is 2.4X

that mean Philips 6X BD-R Media is faster than Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R DL Media 2.5 times(6/2.4),

If you want to burn DVD+R DL Media faster, you should buy a faster DVD+R DL Media, your burner supports to burn DVD+R(DL) at 8X speed and 12X at read speed.

The burn speeds are different for CD, DVD and Blu-Ray Disks:

1X Speed:

CD = 0.1536 MB/sec
DVD = 1.385 MB/sec
Blu-Ray = 4.5 MB/sec

Therefore:

2.4X DVD+R DL = 3.324 MB/sec
6X BD-R = 27 MB/sec

I would need 19.5X DVD+R DL to equal the write speed of a 6X BD-R Disk. The fastest write speed DVD+R DL media is currently 8X (11.08 MB/sec).

Therefore, storing backup on HDD or external HDD(USB 3.0 is better, both HDD and USB port) will be the fastest way. Or USB 3.0"s USB Flash Key with fast write and read speed.

I recently purchased some Verbatim 8X DL DVD+R's.

On a different PC, I just Imaged to one of the Verbatim 8x DL DVD+R's and the Image and Verify times were almost cut in half when compared with Imaging to Verbatim 2.4X DL DVD+R's on the same PC.

Image File Size: 6.49 GB

Verbatim 8X DL DVD+R:

Image Time: 14.5 minutes
Image + Verify: 24 minutes

Verbatim 2.4X DL DVD+R (I do not remember the exact times.):

Image Time: ~25 minutes
Image + Verify: ~45 minutes
