So I went out searching for the E000101F4 error on the Acronis website and up pops: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/support/kb/articles/874/

Acronis True Image does not recognize hard drives when there is HP Backup & Recovery installed

    blab blah blah

Well by freak chance this IS an HP notebook... EXCEPT the original HDD failed on Day 2 (no comment). I happened to have a spare HDD which I dropped in, wiped out and installed WinXP, etc. on from scratch. I took my existing Acronis Recovery CD (predates the notebook purchase), stuck that in and booted from it (wanted to make a copy of the disk so I can restore it on the replacement HDD that arrived on Monday). Had my nice CAT5 Ethernet cable plugged in, selected the backup computer and it squawked about "Error: E000101F4: Acronis True Image Home has not found any hard disk drives."

    Here's the rub...
no "HP Backup and Recovery" was ever installed
I was booted from a Recovery CD that was built on a "home-brew" system

It's clearly NOT an issue specifically with "HP Backup and Recovery".

Might be a BIOS issue though.

As the HP BIOS will probably 'know' about some of HP's proprietary hardware and software utilities.

    Hello SenseiC,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

We are sorry for delayed response.

Please notice that the article you mentioned describes the issue with compatibility in Windows. It doesn't apply to Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.

Most likely, the reason for the issue you encountered is Acronis Bootable Rescue Media you use lacks proper drivers for that computer's hardware. Please make sure you use the latest build of the respective version of Acronis True Image. To get access to updates you should first register your software. Don't forget to recreate Acronis Bootable Rescue Media after updating.

If the latest build doesn't solve the problem, please try booting with "acpi=off noapic" parameter as it is described in Acronis Help Post.

Note that if you use an older version of Acronis True Image (version 8.0 or lower) you should press F11 button when the "Starting Acronis Loader..." message appears and not when the selection screen appears (Acronis True Image 8.0 Bootable Rescue CD for example does not have any selection screen).

If the issue persists, could you please clarify, what version of Acronis True Image are you using? You can find the full version name and build number by going to Help -> About... menu in the main program window.

    Thank you.
