1)block file extentions in real time, preventing downloading virus/spywares.

    AVAST HOME 4.8
    AVG 8 FREE
    AVIRA PE
you would also need a free antispyware for occasional on demand scans
    SAS free
    MBAM FREE
They will all offer almost the same protection and give the same impact on your computer but AVIRA does not cover antispyware

Uhm... no really what you are after here, what kind of extensions? It should wipe infected downloads, not block users from downloading legit applications I'd say?!

    On what OS/HW?

An AV which fails to detect half of malware is utterly useless IMNSHO.

Pretty much doubt this thread will continue productively; anyway, I'd recommend Avira Antivir Free or Avast Free.

Blocking totally harmless files based on their extension instead of their contents is not a task for antivirus but for a FTP/HTTP/email/whatever other proxy.

do you think that christmas.exe ,do you think this file is harmless?so what i need is to be able to lock down file extentions to restrick downloads from the net and only allow when i need or want.thanks again.if a could achieve this in a free antivirus it will be a dream for me.

I have no idea whether christmas.exe is harmless or not, need to have the file available to check. I have no idea whether "Firefox Setup 3.0.1.exe" is harmful or harmless either without looking at the file.

If it's malware, then your AV needs to detect it based on contents. If not, there's absolutely no need for antivirus to block any such stuff and you are preventing your users from downloading totally legitimate applications. That's a job for you proxy if you wish to do such things, AVs are not supposed to kill innocent stuff.

Avira PE or Avast with Windows Defender in Spynet mode with real time protection. All free and good.

Yes, and additionally I would suggest jmonge spend a few days studying the subject of selecting an AV at:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/

There users can learn about/ refresh their memories about ALL the factors to consider for selection, NOT just price.

This is a good suggestion. The only way to know which one runs best on your system is to try each. There "ain't no other way."

Avast has always been my free choice, but one of the other two may work better for you.
As has been suggested examine the latest AV Comparatives tests, and that will give you an idea of the detection capabilities and FPs.

Any of the three free AVs will give you excellent protection, and it is mainly a matter of which runs best on your system.

    Best,
    Jerry

You are very welcome. Surprisingly enough, to me at least, the lates test of AVC showed Avast doing better than nearly all of the paid AVs.

In the past I have used it, installed it on family and friends computers, and none has been infected.

    Best,
    Jerry

Try this, that can do the job. Problem of this application it either works fine or won't install see for tips https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=161749 combine it with Avast (only use standard shield, uncheck on execyution scanning and check on reads = check only at writes)
