Hackers using new 'smishing' text message scam

Cyber-criminals have devised a new scam to access victims’ personal information via text message.

This scam is called ‘smishing’ which is similar to the phishing email scam.

Hackers send realistic texts to smartphone users, pretending to be banks, government associations and more.

With these texts, they hope that people click on links and enter personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Experts say that this new scam comes as hackers realize people are more aware of suspicious emails, but still trust text messages.

Punycode Makes SMiShing Attacks More Deceiving
Phishing attacks carried out via text messages that use the “Punycode” technique to make nefarious URLs look legitimate are becoming more popular, cloud security firm Zscaler says.

Referred to as SMiShing, SMS phishing is a technique where attackers use text messages in an attempt to trick users into clicking a link that usually leads to malware or asks for sensitive information from the victims.

Recently, cybercriminals engaged in SMiShing campaigns started using Punycode (a technique also known as homograph attack) to deceive users into believing they are accessing a legitimate link. Specifically, the attackers replace one or more characters in the URL with similar-looking characters that are represented differently in Punycode.

“SMiShing has been on a rise in year 2018 and the addition of homograph technique will continue to make it more effective against unsuspecting mobile users. Web browsers have implemented protections against homograph attacks, but because of the legitimate use of Punycode characters, it becomes very difficult for the developers to implement a foolproof fix. Attackers leverage this to work around the rules and create homographs which are displayed as IDNs despite being malicious in nature,” Zscaler concludes.

"Lucky Draw" Smishing Campaign Asks Money to Deliver Car Prize

A new smishing campaign, or text message phishing campaign, is targeting Nokia owners in India. These text messages pretend to be from Nokia and state that the recipient has won a lucky draw to win a car or money.

In a forum post made by a Nokia staff member, Nokia is warning users to ignore any text messages that claim to be from Nokia that state that the customer has won a lucky draw.
These text messages state that the recipient has won either a Tata Safari or 1,260,000 Indian Rupees and must call them to pay 6,500 Rs in order to collect the prize.

The text messages themselves claim to be from "Nokia.com online shopping pvt Ltd.co" and are filled with grammatical errors and other inconsitencies that would make it surprising that anyone would fall for this scam.
