Google Maps is incredibly practical — it's how I get around pretty much anywhere outside of my house — but the service also records a ton of info on where you've been and what you've been doing.

Now, the company seems to be getting closer to launching Incognito mode for Maps, making it easier to navigate without leaving any tracks. XDA Developers editor-in-chief Mishaal Rahman tweeted that the feature is now being pushed to closed beta testers.
In particular, when in Incognito mode, Maps won't save your browsing, send notifications, update your location history or shared location, or use your personal data to personalize Maps.

According to Android Police, the feature is also undergoing testing on Android Auto.
The feature was originally announced at Google's I/O 2019 event in May; Google then said it would become available "in the coming weeks," but for unknown reasons it's taking a little longer than that.

Google Maps' Incognito mode is now making its way to all users, just a couple of weeks after it arrived to the app's preview group for testing. Similar to Incognito mode for Chrome and YouTube, turning the feature on means Maps won't be able to save the locations and the directions you look up, or to associate them with your profile.
That said, you might not be able to use it right now: Google will start rolling the feature out to Android users this month. It's "coming soon" to iOS, but there's no concrete release date for Apple's mobile platform yet.

But just like Incognito in Chrome's browser, it doesn't stop your location being recorded

Perhaps as a nod to growing concerns about digital behavior tracking, particularly location tracking, Google has introduced a raft of privacy improvements. Among them: a new Incognito Mode for Maps, which prevents Google from saving certain types of data and removes personalization touches from its Maps app. Just don't assume it makes your movements untraceable.

Enabling the new feature stops data generated by that specific device from showing up in your Google Location History. If you're sharing your location with someone through Google Maps, it'll pause updates about that device's location when active.

"We want to give people more choice and control when it comes to how they manage their data on Google Maps, and we know that there are certain times when you may not want your activity tied to you," Marlo McGriff, a Google Maps product manager, told WIRED
"For example, say you share a device with your significant other—you probably don't want them knowing that you recently searched for engagement ring stores nearby."

As announced in the Google Maps Help forums, Incognito Mode is now rolling out to Android users. If you don't see the toggle when you hit your avatar in the app, be patient — it could take up to a few days.

What the icing on top would be is if iOS users were able to get Incognito Mode, too. Perhaps another day.

Google Maps Incognito mode comes to iOS, Android adding bulk Timeline delete

In recent months, Google has added a number of privacy controlling features to Maps. The latest sees Incognito mode come to Google Maps for iOS, while Android picks up the ability to bulk delete logged locations in Timeline.

Originally debuting in Google Chrome, Incognito mode is high-profile branding that’s easily recognizable. In Maps, places you search for and navigate to won’t be saved to your Google Account with Location History not seeing any updates.
Google Maps Incognito mode for iOS can be accessed by tapping your profile avatar in the top-right corner of the screen. A dialog will provide a summary of what’s changing on initial usage, and it’s rolling out starting today. The Android feature became widely available last month.

Meanwhile, the Timeline that displays your Location History in a concise view is getting bulk deletion next month on Android. This builds on the ability to auto-delete data older than three or 18 months.

With bulk delete, you can quickly find and delete multiple places from your Timeline and Location History all at once. You’ll still have the ability to delete all or part of your Timeline by date range from your Location History settings.

Sounds on the surface like a useful privacy feature. But truth be known that digital data may show delete on the end user side but you can bet your buttons it's safely stored away in their compartmentalized setups for present or future reference and access.

Incognito mode added to Google App for iOS: Maps, YouTube soon

Google’s spreading the Incognito Mode experience across more apps than just Chrome in the near future. Today’s expansion is for the Google App (aka the Google Search app) for iOS devices. The Google App for your iPhone or iPad now has an Incognito mode via your profile picture. Just press that picture and hold it down for a little bit – it’ll give you a fancy set of glasses and mysterious hat, just like a real incognito individual!

If you’re in the latest version of the Google App for iOS, long-press your profile picture. You’ll need to be logged in to your Google account in order for this feature to work. Once you long-press the icon, you’ll turn on Incognito mode. Look a this process – it’s pretty simple. If you’ve got the latest version of the Google App for iOS, this should work real slick.

Once Incognito Mode is on, Google will no longer add your searches or browsing history to your collected Google user data.
The next Google apps that are scheduled to get this long-press Incognito Mode feature are Google Maps (expanded, easier) and YouTube.
