Look at this thread: lightweight security for win98

BTW if you plan on using antivirus, try avast. Afaik Avira and AVG have since dropped support for Win9x.

Is it possible that Win98/WinMe are secure systems in-themselves by virtue of their antiquity?

Are they now equivalent to *nix and Mac systems for obscurity to mainstream malware attacks, to render them relatively immune?

I ask because I do not know, but it seems plausible that with current malware targeted at the NT systems (200*, XP, Vista), perhaps the old systems are not susceptible to the code.

    Possible?

Not sure if they are more secure than newer systems due to their obsolete status. Hackers will target OS systems that the majority of users will be using. There are still reports of outdated viruses still being distributed around the world. People can reuse the code of those old programs and then distribute them around and then attack your older system. A lot of the attacks are more subtle and you usually get infected by just browsing through a URL link. A lot of the malware target OS settings and code which while it is mainly targeted at newer system programs, I don't think any computer system is totally immune.

Avira dropped support for Windows 98 earlier. However, you still have until August 2008 before AVG pulls out.

But can you still download AVG 7.5 from the website?
