Free Firewalls and Anti-Virus

What are the best free firewalls and anti-virus programs to run together? My friend uses ZA Free and AVG Free and says it works well for the money (free). Are there any other combinations to consider?

 

zone alarm and avast would be another good free option.

 

I'm running Avast and Sunbelt Kerio together at the moment and they work like a charm. I've also used AVG with Kerio and that was problem-free as well.

 

I know of a couple of folks, and I have in the past, who run Avast free with Kerio 2.1.5 without any trouble.

I have not heard of any firewall giving problems with Avast.

Core Force contains the best free firewall solution for Windows I've tried (by far, in my opinion), although is actually a lockdown/intrusion prevention suite (very, very configurable, and not really for everybody... definitely not an "install and forget" software).

 

I guess it really depends how knowledgeable you are in this area. For a basic set up ZA free and AVG would be ok, but a more advanced user would most likely go for something more like TNT mentioned. If you only stick to safe sites, avoid IE and pratice safe hex you probably could get by with just ZA free and AVG, but then you may never know if you were compromised by a more advanced threat or not.

 

The best are CHX and avast! Home, but if you want a better user friendly firewall go with Kerio Personal Firewall...

 

One of my computers is running Avast and Sunbelt Kerio and the other is running AntiVir and Sunbelt Kerio.

In both cases, I'm very satisfied and have not had any issues.

 

There should be no question about the free Av . Avast ! . As for the firewall , ZA or Kerio . Kerio being the better choice for me IF I was choosing between the two . Either should do you well

 

There are lots of good free firewalls, but personally I think it's a lot better to go with a paid antivirus. If you look around you can usually find one for very cheap, if not free. Check with your ISP, they may have something for you (usually on the website if you look around), you can also go to something like Home Depot and look in the bargain software, there's often rebranded paid software for very cheap.. I've seen F-Secure and Kaspersky.. the Kaspersky one being Defender Pro, both were $5-$10.

Free Firewall? Windows XP SP2 built-in firewall is one of the best free firewall to protect the pc immediately from inbound attacks and will make pc invisible in the net, didn't consume much cpu and ram and is best for beginners and non-technos and probably one of the best suited for dial-up users. Aside from that it didn't bother you for many pop-ups just like the others. Just set it to no exceptions, additionaly install XP Firemon to monitor it, download Windows Worm Doors Cleaner to close those vulnerable open ports, and Harden-IT to improve network protection and then use Avast Home Free AntiVirus to filter your browser from virus and worms...and it can also detects some Trojans and spywares. After that, add ProcessGuard free edition to protect them from being terminated and modified. Simple as that, for ordinary surfers...who didn't have multi-million dollar accounts in their pc. That's all.
