Earlier this year we reported that Motorola might be rebooting its classic RAZR phones. It was eventually confirmed by the Vice President of Motorola that the company is indeed working on a foldable phone to compete with the likes of Huawei and Samsung.

Earlier this year a Motorola exec confirmed to Engadget that the company was hard at work on foldable phone technology, and rumors about a new RAZR-branded device just won't go away. Now CNET reports it's sending out invites for a November 13th event in Los Angeles that promise the "highly-anticipated unveiling of a reinvented icon."

Along with embedded GIF of something that looks like a hinged mobile device, it's not hard to figure out what we'll see, but the exact details of how it will work are still unclear.
Can Lenovo/Motorola get the flexible device right, and perhaps bring back vertically-oriented smartphones before Essential has the chance to? We'll apparently find out next month.

Motorola is unveiling its highly-anticipated foldable smartphone that's said to be a revamp of the company's iconic Razr flip-phone on November 13.
But why wait when there are leaked photos online?

On Thursday, German tech site Mobielkopen got a hold of some images that supposedly show the new Motorola Razr, giving us a much better idea of what to expect on November 13. You can check out the photos on their website here.
Mobielkopen doesn't say where it got the images from, and there's no official confirmation the images are actually of the new Motorola phone. But it appears that the hinge in Motorola's event GIF and the leaked photos are identical, which lends some credence to Mobielkopen's images.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Motorola is planning to revive the old RAZR brand with a limited edition foldable phone. Later some of the specs of this foldable phone got leaked.

Today, the FCC listing of this upcoming Motorola razr device went public and it has revealed several images and details about the device. The new razr device will have an USB-C port for charging and it will come with a fingerprint sensor for easy and quick authentication.
Motorola is expected to officially announce this device at a press event later today.

EE has announced that the new Motorola Razr will be exclusively stocked online and in its stores following a partnership with Motorola. The new Motorola Razr is a callback to the Motorola Razr from the 2000s which was a very popular flip phone. The new version also incorporates a flip design in order to house a 6.2-inch Flex View display.

Commenting on the news, Sharon Meadows, Director of Devices, Partnerships & Business Development at EE, said:

“[...] By partnering with Motorola on the new razr, our customers will get exclusive access to what already promises to be an iconic new smartphone. Only on EE will customers get the most out of the new razr with the UK’s best network, best in class unlimited plans and great swappable benefits.”
The Motorola Razr is due to launch in January 2020 for $1,500 (£1,170). EE has not announced the plans which it will sell this device on but the price announced by Motorola suggests that the plans will be pricey.

So that's exactly what I did. [...]

I haven't been truly excited about phones with foldable displays. I've felt like there's still a lot of issues and ideas that need to be figured out before the Galaxy Fold's of the world make sense. But, for me, the Razr makes sense, and now I'm excited to see what more companies do with foldable display technology.

Part foldable phone, part nostalgia milking machine, the Motorola RAZR has made foldable devices exciting again, following the botched releases of both the Huawei Mate X and the Galaxy Fold.
Unfortunately, though, the phone's nostalgia factor may have been too high, as the reimagination of Motorola's classic from 2004 is being slightly delayed due to excessive demand.

The company had previously committed to opening preorders the day after Christmas and general availability sometime in January but says it's now revising its launch window.
The company's full statement reads as follows:

"Since its announcement in November, the new Motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions. [...] We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline."
Notably, the statement doesn't clarify when preorders will start again in light of the change, or when phones the will actually make their way to consumers. The bit at the end does give us hope that it won't be too far into the future.

Today’s the day that the Motorola Razr is available for pre-sale for $1499, exclusively on Verizon.

Alongside the pre-order launch, Motorola has posted a series of videos on its YouTube channel that are somewhere between brief ads and how-tos for the folding phone. And as you might have guessed from the headline, “Caring for razr” caught our eye.
With the Galaxy Fold, “bumps and lumps” ended up being the first harbingers of a catastrophic screen failure on our review unit. Apparently that’s not going to be the case with the Razr.

They really are going for the stack the pot retail price. RAZR "was" going to be my next return to Motorola after a very successful stint with E815 back in 2002 I think. It was the ideal clamshell handset for my purposes.

Nothing. including the foldable craze appeals to some as much as the clamshell and i'm solidly in that group come what may.

Motorola had some outstanding flip/clamshell handsets when live video was first streaming out to those devices if I remember right.

When I first caught wind of a new Motorola Razr on the horizon, one of my initial reactions was, "We've got to put it in the FoldBot!"
Starting at 12 p.m. PT Thursday, CNET began streaming what we hoped would be a 12-plus hour live show to find out if the phone could hold up to being folded 100,000 times. Note that we used a Razr we purchased ourselves.

The goal was to stream the test until the wee hours of Friday morning when we planned to hit 100,000 folds. However, as soon as the test started, we noticed the FoldBot was having some trouble closing the phone all the way each time. [...] So, with around 27,000 folds on the counter, we stopped the test and called it a day.

The Verge: Motorola Razr fold test shows it could fail in less than 12 months of use

If we make the assumption that a person checks their phone between 80 and 150 times a day, then this particular Razr would have failed after between six and 12 months of use. Motorola hasn’t said how many folds it expects the Razr to be able to survive, but noted that it should survive two years. It also offers a one-year warranty for “defects incurred during normal use.”

A hot potato: Motorola is standing by the durability of its newly minted Razr foldable smartphone after a questionable torture test from CNET cast it in an unfavorable light. But was this really a fair analysis?

The publication recently strapped a retail version of the Motorola Razr to a mechanical test device called the FoldBot.
But was this test really fair? Motorola doesn’t think so, and neither do I.

In a statement issued to Engadget and other publications, a Motorola spokesperson said SquareTrade’s FoldBot is simply not designed to test their device.

“Therefore, any tests run utilizing this machine will put undue stress on the hinge and not allow the phone to open and close as intended, making the test inaccurate,” the spokesperson added. And they are right.
Yet another thing worth mentioning is the cycle speed. CNET said that at full tilt, the bot opens and closes the phone 2.5 times per second. This isn’t representative of actual use and the constant cycling could have created excess heat within the hinge that would not be experienced during normal use.

Foldable phones, at least for the moment, are significantly more fragile than more common types of smartphones. The screens are plastic to allow folding, not glass, and the gap between the screen and phone body can allow dirt to get inside — something Samsung learned very quickly with the first batch of Galaxy Folds.

The video doesn't start out particularly well, with the screen scratching very easily. The rest of the phone fares better, with most of the other components covered in metal and glass. The fingerprint sensor even still works after being scratched and dented.
Pocket sand can't hurt the Razr (at least within a few minutes). [...]

Motorola Razr undergoes iFixit’s ‘most complicated’ teardown yet

iFixit has posted a detailed teardown of Motorola’s foldable Razr, giving us our best look yet at the the inside of the device and its complicated mechanical hinging mechanism. Although iFixit praises the “numerous feats of engineering” that the company pulled off with its design, it says that its complexity made the Razr the “most complicated phone-based contraption” its ever taken apart.

There were several reasons for this. Motorola’s gratuitous use of glue makes the device tricky to open in the first place, and even then there are plenty of flex cables that are easy to accidentally snap, creating “booby traps” for would-be repairers. It’s so complicated that iFixit says it’s surprising that Motorola is able to offer screen repairs for “just $299.”
iFixit awarded the phone its lowest possible repairability score of 1, but was broadly forgiving in its writeup, noting that it’s hard to expect perfect repairability on a first-generation device.

However, Motorola revealed back in December that they were working on a 5G version of the Razr, and recently a representative for Lenovo, the Chinese company that owns Motorola, revealed a possible launch date. To add to this, we can now share a lot of the hardware specifications for the upcoming Motorola Razr revamp.
The new Motorola Razr, when it launches, should bridge the gap between it and the Galaxy Z Flip in terms of specifications.
Motorola Razr (Gen. 2) – What we think we know so far
According to our source, the 5G-enabled, second-generation Motorola Razr has the code-name “smith” and model name “XT2071-4.” The foldable is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and a 2,845mAh battery.

As confirmed by Motorola’s parent company Lenovo, the second-generation Razr will support 5G connectivity, made possible with the inclusion of the Snapdragon 765 with its Snapdragon X52 modem. The device will likely only support sub-6GHz 5G networks as I’m not sure if Motorola will be able to pack mmWave antennas into the body to support mmWave 5G networks like Verizon’s Ultrawide Band network.

As with any leak, things can change before launch. Our leaks of the first-generation Motorola Razr device turned out to be accurate, though notably the battery capacity that we first revealed back in March of 2019 was changed to the lower capacity unit ended up in retail units. We anticipated that change ahead of launch and will, of course, keep an eye out for any such changes in the second-generation Razr.

Motorola RAZR 2, which is rumored to come with a more powerful Snapdragon 765 chipset and a few other upgrades, may not be launched this year. According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the RAZR 2 has been delayed by a quarter due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If Young's information is accurate, the Motorola RAZR 2 will be launched sometime early next year. However, it is possible that the Lenovo-owned company will announce the phone in the fourth quarter of the year and begin selling it in the first quarter of 2021.
