Since I may not be working for awhile, when Mcafee expired, I didn't renew it. I need to find something free and reliable .

Also, if there is one that I can understand just a little bit. I am still learning computer jargon. A firewall is to keep a hacker from taking over my computer?

Just make sure the now expired McAfee firewall is removed prior to installing ZA. Also verify that your system meets the recommended system requirements for ZA.

Is the penalty of not buying zone alarm lots of popups? They are very frequent and sometimes annoying.

You could try an older version if pop ups are annoying and can't be adequately disabled. I don't believe they were as prevalent in legacy versions. BroadbandReports.com had a thread that mentioned older, leaner versions of firewalls recently. A direct link to the legacy ZA versions is here.
