Exploring the Ports…what is the best free internet connection watcher?

Port Explorer from DiamondCS was great… as it really can detect all activities of those ports used by our system when we’re connected to net. And even if I’m not an advanced user I know that it’s very powerful and very useful for detecting those “unseen” connections. I can even consider this program as one of the most interesting to use aside from being one of the most important for “security conscious web surfers”. This could be one of the best software program in tandem to our Anti-Trojan and Firewall software protections.

I am in the process of trying to evaluate Port Explorer but unluckily I’ve only tried it for a day, coz in the next day that I tried to used it… it didn’t open anymore and it just says that I have already used it 50 times or 30 days, and when I hit the ok button it just directs me to the DiamondCS website to buy this product. I have no choice but to remove the program in my pc as I am not yet ready to purchase it. I was very surprised how fast it stayed and gone in my pc, well, just like a bubble suddenly disappeared in front of me. Maybe, I’ve hit something on that program that have triggered the end of the supposed to be 30 days of evaluation testing. Anyway…even if I’ve only tried it for a day I found out that the program is very impressive.. but for now I’m not yet ready to buy it.

This program is not free… did you know some free alternative software that comes close to DiamondCS Port Explorer, that can also detects those suspicious connections high lightened in red? Coz as of now… I only knew and was using TCP View from sysinternals.com for viewing all of the ports activities for assisting my firewall. TCP view of sysinternals is also very useful but the problem was that it didn’t indicate whether the connections are suspicious or legitimates like what Port Explorer do.

 

I don't know of any free programs that come close to what Port Explorer does. I doubt you would find anything that good for free.

About the best the freebie lovers among us can do are TCPView or Active Ports.
I prefer Active Ports to TCPView though.

 

But some says Active Ports (users review in download.com) contained w virus and spywares by some anti-virus spyware programs and also has some trojans in it.

 

Nope a bunch of noobs at download.com reviews. Active Ports is clean and doesn't contain any malware, if download from the authors website. I guess download.com is fairly safe too. NAV and other anti-malware falsely identify it as malware, but it is safe.

 

I have already downloaded it... and will install it later.

Heres an example of how Fport works;

For example, lets say a hacker uses the RPC/DCOM exploit that came out recently to get a command shell to your computer. They download and install SubSeven on your computer. As many installations of SubSeven use the default TCP Port 27374 it makes it very easy to spot this Trojan running on your computer.

By running Fport you would see the following (Formatting is a little messed up here):

Hi all....just got fport and found that when used it displays a command prompt
type of screen then disappears.....could anyone inform me of how to keep the screen visible for inspection!!!PS,i`m a novice at this..........also could anyone help in pointing me to a site that could show me how to `command prompt`!!!!All the best......marty1.

Just uninstall and install again, that sorted it out for me, youll just continue on that trial as the "keyfile" resides somewhere else. Though you might have to do the install/uninstall routine again in some day... or not. Basically you should be able to enjoy the full 30days/50 starts.

I used to use Activeports before. Preferred that one over TCPView and CurrPorts.
