A bit premature to write off the site.

There is a few years worth of data that could never come back that would only help search results.

I'm just looking at it from a monetary standpoint, it's going to take some damn huge amounts of cash to get this site going again. I really don't know if it's even possible to get out of this hole. I don't think DSLReports made that much money to cover the cost of this.

I figure it's going to take cash out of Justin's personal wallet to pay for this. And with a wife and kids to take care of, I can't see how this is going to work.

Unless Justin asks for a crap ton of donations and that means we're all going to end up having to donate a lot of money to him to recover the costs. I'm figuring $50 per person on that site.

I hate thinking like this because I really do want the site to come back, make no mistake, I really do want the site to come back. But I'm also a realist in this situation, I see the monumental "mountain" that Justin needs to climb here.

Only a wild guess, mind you. But you may be underestimating how much cash Justin has to play around with. Of course, then the question becomes how much is he willing to play around with. ;)
Again, only speculation on my part. I just really hope the site eventually comes back.
And my gut feeling is that it will, in one form or another. (Even if only innitially a mere shadow of it's former self).
Just hope there's a slight chance I can get some of my several hunderd IM's back.
Some of them were real keepers. :D

I hope the site comes back up soon. Doesn't matter that much anymore if stuff is missing. Just can't have it down that long.

I know nothing about the technical aspects of this situation, but I have a question. Even if there is a ton of lost data isn't it possible to start fresh? I mean with the heavy volume that the site receives it could get repopulated rather quickly couldn't it?

BTW, there are some interesting comments about the problem over here:

I am not in Justin's shoes with the situation, but I tend to agree with this statement. I've been a member there for just over 9 years. I paid for and have donated dollars to DSLreports. DSLreports is a home to many. A place to post, research, provide help for anything.

Even if there is a ton of data loss, at this point - why not just get the shell running? Why not just take the data loss, and build from there? Why not place an "off-line" archive like now, and just run at least a front page with news that people provided?

With being down for this long, even the limited ad revenue that was being made is zero now. The way the web is today, being down for more then 2 weeks almost gives you zero relevancy in the tech world.

Without knowing the full situation - maybe all the user data is gone? Maybe most if not all the custom code is gone as well. I would hope that Justin would provide that information to us. I also understand the business world, and if he is responsible for contracts or NDA's - he may not be able to give that information out.

I would hope that Justin can and would reach out to the several thousand of paid and non-paid users to ask for assistance. I would donate time, or even ask coworkers or friends to help with either knowledge or even donations.

Alrighty, Mr. Sunshine. I think we're all pretty clear on your assessment at this point.
Stop putting that happy face on everything and give it a rest for a while, eh? ;)

Dslreports is (was) good for the variety of forums in one location. Security slipped over the years but other forums became stronger.
You really couldn't call it super high level yet the forums are/ were active and had some experts still hanging around.
You do not have to always exert great amounts of brain power to post there. Other more specialized or higher level forums may require more thought.
Here I just usually read in the past. Not really over my head just needs more thinking power here. Then there are other security forums even more advanced.
Same with VOIP there and other forums. You didn't need to be the best or the brightest just interested to post.

I hope the site comes back up soon and that all data can be recovered.

    Good luck Justin!

You could browse the outdated posts a couple days ago, but most of the links on the site forward to the outage page.

I can be patient. I can understand they would like a full restore, but I would be happy if they just locked the old posts as archived, allowing us to start over again if the restoration wasn't possible without having to spend enough money recovering the data which they could buy a couple new servers for.

I have no idea what the site might make with the advertising, and don't think it's my place to ask. Apparently it was enough to keep it running on autopilot with a little remote maintenance so he could focus on his family, and maybe even support his family in some way, otherwise it seems the site wouldn't have lasted as long as it did.

Is anyone in contact with Justin? If he needs financial assistance I'm sure there are a lot of people that would be willing to chip in - including me. I would really hate to see the site go down for good.
