I would rather pay 15 dollars than 15 pounds. If pounds, that's 27dollars!
Don't even talk about euros. A tool to take over countries without firing bullets.
Why are euros almost always equivalent to dollars?

The DS thread here is dying...or dead. I lost interest in DS because they don't maintain their own forum. It was never upto date. They need to scmooz for an admin/moderator to their forum. Someone who can help to maintain and keep updated info will go a long way towards customer service.

Hey, wait a minute. $15 or L15. That's a potential difference I can exploit for profit. Resell my US product license to people in the UK for L11. I make $5 us and they save 4 pounds sterling.
In order to quit my job in masonry, I would have to sell 200 a week. Should I quit my day job?

What really sucks is as an original subscriber to DS i feel that i have been no more than a paying beta tester for their product as it has been very buggy at times.

I too will no longer use DS.

    Hi All,
My name is Polly, I've taken over from Katie at DriveSentry who has moved on to pastures new.
We've been extremely busy over the past few weeks with a new product release hence the limited posting here recently.

I know you have lots of questions and I hope I can answer as many of them as possible, especially general product enquiries. If you have any specific technical questions, please head on over to our forum where you can post or see other answers (http://forum.drivesentry.com)

We have also updated our Frequently Asked Questions section with answers to many of the questions you are asking here regarding the new DriveSentry Security Suite:
    http://forum.drivesentry.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=290

I'll try and pop in here as much as possible to help out, please be gentle though I'm new around here!

    Regards
    Polly

    Hello Polly and Welcome,

I'll try to be gentle here but I have to ask.

Before you first posted here, did you or anyone from DS read thru this thread?
I ask because the links you gave do not answer alot of the questions here that I can see.
Reminded me more of a standard form letter.
Maybe I'm off the wall here but DS seems to be vague and evasive.
You have posters here ready to give up on DS, myself included.

This thread has been running for 4 days now.
Some answers and explanations would be nice.

    Thank you.
    Dan

Mmm to be honest i don't really see anything extra in the security suite worth upgrading to?
    http://forum.drivesentry.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=290
and updates will still continue apparently with current version.

    There isn't. This is a money-grab.

They have been spouting on about new features and fixing memory leaks for a while using us as beta-testers for the core engine.

    Now they're done with us.

    Time to move on.

How long before the original DS ceases to exist and you get that special offer of $5 to upgrade?

Boycott DS. The money isn't big but the principle is. If they had introduced a firewall I can understand but this is just money-grabbing.

They have renamed an existing product to get more cash. Possibly, due to the GFC, they are feeling the pinch and need it.

Let me step in for a minute. If you go back to the start of DS here, I was one of the most negative members here about this product. Nothing changed over time and I really felt the ploy of having a rep here with their facial avatar was nothing more then a ploy. Maybe I was wrong, but still do think it is a mistake. Do you really want Joe with Prevx, or Marcos with Eset to use their own portrait for their avatar.

Well you sure dont want Stefan, trust me on that one. Lol

But,,,,,,,obviously there are internal changes going on at DS and really we should see how it pans out before just assuming things. So they charge a price, but in return you need to see what that might get you. I am not saying everyone here is wrong, but sit back and lets see how it pans out.

    trjam,

What panning do you have in mind?

They have renamed an existing product and added two features which I don't need as I already have free products for the added functionality. FACT

They say are releasing a new version of the old DS soon. Let's be honest they ain't that good with delivering (lots of talk) so what will be the effect of them developing/supporting two products. FACT

They will drop the old DS within three months as it doesn't make commercial sense to run both. PREDICTION

If you are an existing user and want to stay with the company you will be forking out extra cash in the near future. PREDICTION

Can't wait for the firewall to appear -that will be an extra $? PREDICTION

People, as a consumer I am skeptical. As a human, I say "give them a chance, they may actually be different". Do I believe it, no, but on rare occasion I have seen the positive stuff happen, we all have. They may be the one sincere product in a couple of dozen so let's give them a chance, but if they end up being like the majority of insincere SOBs... then we can nail them.

    Guys,

Ellison is right, the current version will still keep working. Question will be for how long? There are two reasons for questioning this.

    1. It is expensive to maintain and update two different version of a software package from an internal cost perspective

    2. Being partly an AV, it is likely that the black list fingerprints data base should evolve to facilitate more advanced generic fingerprint and heuristics. In fact Katie has announced overhauls several times. With this in mind it would be very costly to update old 3.3.0.4 Drive Sentry with this new engine/architecture.

On the other hand the 'ultimate' rootkit protection was also promised to us by Katie in their thread. So maybe DS will update the old application with this features also, possibly parse newer AV engine upgrades to old lisence keepers also. Although this would not make any sense from a commercial point of view (pulling away reasons to upgrade, when innovation will be made available to old products also).

After all 10 euros is not a big deal. I did not need the program, just wanted to support a fresh thinking security program. My regret is that they did not offer their existing customers a better upgrade deal. Ilya of DefenseWall for instance promised his existing lisence keepers a free upgrade to version 3, which should provide strong outbound protection also. He also promised a modular software architecture, this to satisfy current users which only want a HIPS/policy management version (with different pricing schedule). This will take a lot of programming effort, but is a good example of respecting old customers (both from a financial and user need point of view).

Why send good money after bad?

"Cheap" is not quite the same as "economical."

"Cheap software" covers low price only. "Economical software" covers low price PLUS good support by a highly ethical organization.

Given the apparent lack of concern that DS has for current customers, who is to say they won't jiggle their product/price arrangements again later on? You pay the added 10 euros now, but then -- some day later on -- they may again decide to come up with yet another "new approach" and yet another need for you to pay yet another 10 euros.

I have a list of "cheap software", and I have a list of "economical software". Guess where I have listed DS.

    Hi Guys,
Seems there is some confusion with the new Security Suite. o_O
Basically we haven't renamed DriveSentry Desktop and put the price up!
The Security Suite is a combined package of two products DriveSentry Desktop and DriveSentry GoAnywhere with some new features thrown in. On top of the existing functionality available in both products there is now the ability to encrypt your data on the PC and also synchronise/backup data from your portable storage device running GoAnywhere to your PC.
The suite came about as we've seen an increasing demand recently for customers wanting anti-virus and data protection/backup for both desktop PC's and portable storage devices.

DriveSentry Desktop (free/paid) is still available and will continue to be developed (it is part of the Security Suite anyway). Our goal is ultimately to provide as much value as possible and reasons to upgrade to our paid products whilst still providing comprehensive anti-virus protection with our free product.

Hope this make things a bit clearer!

    Regards
    Polly

Isn't it a bit misleading to call it a suite when you don't have a firewall?

Took me a minute to catch that one, Kees old shoe. "cheap" ==> "sheep" says "beeehhh". :D :p

Meanwhile, back at the topic -- welcome aboard, Polly!

Based on your comments, I *possibly* stand corrected. However... where is a download link for the free/paid(lifetime) DriveSentry Desktop?

As a former Product Manager I set out in my business-case the product life-cycle. Care to share how long DS Desktop will be? Your statement is pretty open. What is its lifetime?

If you stop actively marketing a product then that's not a good sign, hence, my question.

The common-sense and cost-effective approach is to make all existing licences applicable to the new suite so that you may focus your development and marketing and continue with happy customers recommending your product.

Let's be honest I doubt many of your existing customers will see things different to us (OK, we are more than cynical) and so the upgrade revenues will not be that great. Big question is the PR: happy customers recommending versus unhappy customers not recommending.

I hope Polly answers soon. I still can find NO link for downloading the free DriveSentry Desktop version. Is there one? If so, where?
