I have IE 5 (the default install of the W2K CD) locked down with a noaccess.rat and IP restricted at the firewall to Windows Update. And just enough permissions at the HIPS for its webview component in the OS shell to function.

Firefox is the default with noscript rule based javascript control

For me Firefox with NoScript or, and at the moment Opera which I'm liking more and more.

No. It's maybe the third browser, or forth, in terms of functionality alone...
It's a thing of the past.

 

IE is, was and most likely allways will be the only browser, that I will use.
There is none more or less secure browser, it is just a good advertisment.
By the way, there are rumours, that MS will reveal info about IE 8 at MIX.

 

aside from the history of a long patch cycles in IE
with real in the wild exploits taking advantage
(a case of trying to predict based on history which is of course flawed but possibly indicative)

the one thing that is a given
the browser has become one of, if not the primary attack vector
further that malware authors typically want the biggest return on investment
so the majority of focus is on IE

what I recommend if IE is necessary (activeX web sites\applications) and or preference
is to virtualize it with sandboxie (freeware) or similar application
alternately to look at running a virtual OS in its entirety. (VMware player\server also freeware)

 

TheTOM_SK: i won't wait for IE's catching up. Opera is the leader in inovation imo. Whatever they introduce in IE will have to emulate some of Opera's features, or cover what Opera already covers.
I already have a great browser. I don't want to wait for the average browser to catch up

Anyway my opinion.

 

I personally use and recommend IE7. I install it on all my clients PC without incident. IE7 includes a pop-up blocker that was originally in IE6 on Windows XP SP2 and an AntiPhishing filter. IE7 is very safe to use so long as you apply any security patches when they are released which is the second tuesday of every month.

On Windows 2000 I use IE6 fully patched and either the Google Toolbar or MSN Toolbar for pop-up blocking again completely without incident.

IE7 is very stable, secure and the most improved version of Internet Explorer ever. Don't believe all the hysteria that you have to use another browser to be secure. While it is true Opera is the most secure graphical browser for Windows that does not mean IE7 is insecure. You simply need to make sure any and all security updates are applied to it. By default SP2 in XP enables automatic updates for you.

I nor any of my clients have had any problems with the final version of IE7.

 

IE7 is not my default browser but with Server 2003's IE Enhanced Security Config, I dont rele have any security concerns.

 

Yeah lately i've been using IE7 as my primary browser. I really don't have any security concerns as i use win2003's enhanced security config which has IE locked down tight plus ssm bnf helps me control what ip addresses ie can access.

I have not installed this little orphan. It offers nothing that has not been around and perfected for years by superior alternatives. I did test it when I tested Vista, and my impression was one of ... sadness.

I use IE6 for one and only site that I need.

me tooo with this excellent version-7..........and i don't fear about those security bugs and stuff...

 

For you IE is the average browser, for me Opera is the bloatware.
It is all about, what a user need, what features does he really use.
FF is the best in this cathegory, user will install only, what he wants.

 

i alternate between browsers
on my usb stick i have firefox portable which im using atm
i have operausb on my usb stick as well.
my sister uses IE7 with no problems.
my dad uses IE7 as his main browser he refuses to try Firefox or opera.
i don't really have any security concerns with IE7 especially after reading how many security flaws Mozilla had to fix for firefox.
i like opera but it doesnt have one little thing i like in firefox which maybe it can.
is there anyway know if i can have the "bookmark all tabs" in opera?
i just love that feature in firefox.
i use an online game called runescape in IE7 only since it can use alot more cpu in firefox or opera.

I see what you mean, but you use what you want only. I don't use the email client, but i do use the torrent. Not timing the two, but it's about the same opening FF or Opera. It has more options, but doesn't mean i use them all, or that i drags the browser. No indication of that so far.

 

The comparasion has Ie 7 beta 3, i don't mean to degrade the value of this test but for fair comparision , one should retest using IE 7(final version). The other reason i find myself using IE7 is due to compatiblity with almost all website. I have to admit that while doing any online banking i trust Firefox and Opera is my bittorrent client.

 

There isn't any difference in performance and it surely does not beat out Opera.

 

IE7 in Vista is sanboxed (in the TIF) used with non admin account.
