    @Circuit

    OA was abandoned because few users (mostly geeks like us ) and lot of issues (for Average Joes) to report. It doesn't even pay its own development... any reasonable CEO would do the same.
    HIPS are never for Average Joe until they decide to spend hours learning Windows processes...and few will do...

    Doing the work of inbound protection, sure. Fine for people that don't care about outbound filtering... but that's not me. I want control of everything on my box.

    Personally I still use Comodo FW/D+ v5.10 I've yet to find a good reason to change. Great granular control of both outbound filtering and application control. The nature of packet filtering hasn't changed for ages. Updates to FW's these days are all about fixing compatibility issues and bugs. If you're not having problems in either of these 2 areas there's really no reason to update one.

    As for Emsisoft, I used only their AV. I don't use suites. But I've recently changed to MBAM Paid AV. It's exactly what I want in an AV... an AV only, just resident file scanning and a web scanner (which I disable). Nice and light, no bloat.

    Yes I agree, but with a tool that's running on top of the Win Firewall like WFC, you get that control. I don't really miss a third party firewall anymore. I did use ZoneAlarm back in the days, but it's not worth it.

    MBAM always scores bad in AV tests though.

    Yeah but I haven't seen malware in like 15 years. On my main box (XP) I haven't even used a real-time AV in forever. I only use one on my Win7 box because I can't lock it down the same way and don't feel as safe. But still, I've yet to see malware using it either. So my biggest concern is a light footprint and not overlapping with other things on my box. Plus I have it (MBAM) on my box already as an on demand scanner... pretty much always have. But since they've drastically increased the file sizes VT Hash Check can handle I rarely have to use anything but it. I have a dedicated/sandboxed partition for new files (downloaded or via removeable drive) and hit it up with VTHC before moving it elsewhere. It's hard to go wrong with 50 different opinions. Though I've noticed "Baidu" (or something like that) flags pretty much everything as malware.

    Also I personally can't live without being able to set granular outbound FW rules for any internet facing apps. Plus the IP range blocklist. Between that and hosts files in my router I'm blocking a lot of telemetry, phoning home,and things of the sort. Pretty much any site I frequent, I make a list of the IP ranges they use, block them, and then if the site doesn't work find the one(s) I need to allow/delete and block the rest. If the site doesn't need it to function, it's probably doing something undesireable.
