    My System Specs:

    Intel D850GB BIOS vP18
Powerleap PL-P4/N Socket 423 to Socket 478 Upgrade Adapter
    2.8 GHz Pentium 4 (Northwood)
    768 Meg RAM
60 Gig Western Digital C drive
200 Gig Western Digital D drive
ATI Radeon X850 XT PE 256
    Plextor 24x CD burner
    Sony 16x DVD ROM
Adaptec four port USB 2.0 PCI card
    Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
    Netgear WG311 wireless PCI adapter
    Antec TruePower 430w power supply
    Windows XP Home SP2
    DirectX 9.0c
    ATI Catalyst 5.8
    Firefox 1.0.6

Prior to installing my new card, I did a few things to properly prepare. I downloaded the latest Catalyst 5.8 drivers. I uninstalled the drivers and software for the FX 5700 that this card is replacing. I removed the INF files for the Nvidia card from the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.

I physically installed the new card without any issues. I ran the installer (5-8_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_25203.exe) and it extracted the drivers to subdirectories in C:\ATI. After the file extraction, the installer crashed with the following error message:

    Error number: 0x80040707

To get the card to work, I installed the drivers from the CD per the instructions in the manual. The install went smooth, and the system seemed to work fine after reboot. There were no errors in the event logs as well.

I tried to play Guild Wars and it crashed to the desktop a few times. A couple of times the system just rebooted. I went on the web with Firefox to see what I could find about the 0x80040707 error message, and Firefox crashed a to the desktop a couple of times.

I uninstalled the Catalyst drivers from the system, and removed the ATI INF files from the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory. I rebooted the system and pointed the device manager to the subdirectory in C:\ATI, where the Catalyst 5.8 drivers were extracted. I manually installed the ATI control panel so that I could see the temp at which the card was operating at. The installs went smooth, without a hitch. I rebooted the system.

After the reboot, the card was operating at 40c. I played Guild Wars and again the game crashed to the desktop after a few minutes of play. Sometimes the system just rebooted too. I checked the temp of the card after the crashes and still 40c. The Intel Active Monitor software showed all temps and voltages well within specifications, and logged no errors.

What I would like to do is install the Catalyst drivers with the installer, without the 0x80040707 error.

I got this response from ATI tech support:
The first solution that they suggested worked for me. What I don't get is why they have not fixed this problem. It appears, from searches that I have done, that they have had this problem for years.
