Major new test of Android security apps shows that less than half provide effective protection – Out of 204 mobile apps tested, the majority were dubious, unsafe or ineffective.

AV-Comparatives have released their report on the biggest-ever test of Android security apps and their effectiveness against Android malware. The independent testing lab put 204 Android AV apps to the test against an array of common threats, and found that some are much more effective than others. Less than 1 in 6 of the apps tested defended against all 2,000 malicious apps, while over a third failed to reach a block rate of even 30%.

A lot of vendors with perfect or almost perfect score :thumb:

There is also a lot of deceptive apps and apps that are the same thing with slightly different interface. I wonder if Google would remove such apps from Google Play if they get reported.

I got an email advising that this report was available. I run Zemana on my Smartphone! ;) It didn't rate well. Not to worry. I don't do any surfing the internet with it. I prefer using my laptop for that sort of thing. ;)

Bit like saying "I bought a new lock for the front door. It doesn't work too well but not to worry as I don't go out much!"

Beware ad slingers thinly disguised as security apps

    IBK,
Thank you for this information. Lookout protection testings are hard to find. I hear they don't participate in many. I read it somewhere. Is that true? To your knowledge. I was pleased to see in the posted report they did pretty well.

every day there is a post about a 10k+/100k+ downloaded playstore app turning out to be a malware
pick one and you're good to go: ESET, Kaspersky, Norton, Sophos
and put IntelliAV next to them

I used malwarebytes for a while as long as I had a trial. (7 puny days) It found malware once in an app I was about to download. :thumb:
Since I saw the test I changed to Ahnlab K7.

No, I think not. I didn't download the app to find out and rather reported it to Google. I forgot which one it is... we could've checked if it is still there. :(

That's not an option :( Couldn't find an email from Google or anything. Well whatever ...
There are enough to find. Just download the newest, baddest looking app or try to find really old and crappy ones.

Oh, I remember! It was an app for encoding sound files. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: No cant find it because I dont remember the name.
EDIT: And I realized that Ahnlabs K7 does not have a real-time scanner.... time to try another one.

bd is good in memory usage but knowing how late windows sigs in bd and how important sigs are for android avs, i would go with something better.
