When Samsung first launched the Galaxy Fold, it was recalled due to a design flaw in the hinge that allowed dust to enter under the display.

A new patent filed by USPTO describes how the foldable iPhone could "heal" itself from everyday wear and tear. As mentioned earlier, the durability of a foldable display holds significant importance. Apple is potentially working on durability to prevent damage to the display due to folding cycles.

In addition to this, the process of self-healing of the foldable iPhone display can be increased through external factors such as applying heat, light, electric current, or other stimulating elements. The display is said to feature three parts which include two regular panels, a fixed screen, and a rotating mechanism.

There's no doubt that Apple files a lot of patents. However, it is not always certain that the products will ever see daylight. Nonetheless, we can presume that the foldable iPhone is in the works since it already has competition from Samsung, Huawei, and more.

A commercial foldable iPhone is far from reaching consumers' hands, but according to the latest report, Apple might be getting somewhere with it. Foxconn, the technology giant’s long-term assembly partner, is apparently testing out the folding smartphone and if things go according to plan, we might see it during the third quarter of 2022.
Previous Reports Have Pegged the Foldable iPhone to Feature a $1,499 Price Tag
A fresh report from Chinese publication UDN talks about Apple and Foxconn’s partnership going beyond the assembly of ‘candy-bar’ form factor iPhones. This time, Apple has reportedly asked Foxconn to test the foldable display as well as its bearings. These bearings responsible for the folding of the display will likely be sourced from different suppliers, but Foxconn will handle the final assembly.

Apple is said to have procured foldable screens from Samsung previously, suggesting that the Korean giant will likely be the key supplier of this component.
However, if the quality from other manufacturers isn’t according to Apple’s requirements, it will have no choice but to tap Samsung as the chief supplier, even if it means paying the company a premium. As for the foldable iPhone's expected release, this report claims a September 2022 launch, based on information from unnamed supply chain sources.

Barring Apple, almost every other major smartphone OEM has jumped on the foldable device bandwagon. While there have been rumors of Apple working on a foldable iPhone, nothing concrete about its existence or launch has leaked so far. Now, a new DigiTimes report claims that Apple will “step into the foldable smartphone sector in 2022.”

The report also highlights the growing adoption of OLED panels in smartphones that has led LG Display and Japan Display to ramp up their OLED manufacturing efforts.

As Samsung Electronics has already launched three foldable smartphones built using flexible OLED panels, Digitimes Research believes that Apple will likely step into the foldable smartphone sector in 2022, furthering demand for flexible OLED displays.

Apple has a number of foldable iPhone-related patents. The company had reportedly also sent foldable iPhones to Foxconn for testing earlier this year. Leaker Jon Prosser had also detailed Apple’s existing iPhone prototype saying it had an iPhone 11-like design and rounded stainless steel edges.

Foldable iPhone Prototypes Reportedly Pass Apple’s Internal Tests

According to a report by Taiwanese website Economic Daily News, Foxconn has successfully completed durability tests of an Apple-designed folding hinge system for two different iPhones at its factory in Shenzhen, China (via MacRumors).

Out of the two iPhone models, one is the same dual-display prototype rumoured by Apple leaker Jon Prosser earlier this year, which features two separate display panels connected by a hinge.
The second prototype, according to the source, sports a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Lenovo’s Moto RAZR. The report also notes that this clamshell model is set to use a flexible Samsung OLED display.

It is unclear if the two devices to have been tested had different hinge systems. The test units are purported to be shells with very limited internals rather than fully-working devices. This is because the main purpose of the testing was to assess the durability of the Apple-designed hinge system.

In November last year, a report citing Chinese suppliers claimed that Apple began testing folding iPhones for a launch in 2022. Bloomberg today corroborated that rumor with a new report about Apple now working on an iPhone with a foldable screen — although the launch schedule is unknown.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a new iPhone model that can be folded. This new version is expected to compete with similar Samsung devices such as Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. However, it’s unclear whether this folding iPhone will see the light of day.
