Does anyone of you here use VMware workstation? What do you think of it? :)
I'm using it myself now to test another copy of XP Professional. I can create a few virtual machines and test several different operating systems, very interesting.

I use it and like it alot. Only downside is you can't use a USB stick in it.

Found some programs installed on the host still protect the guest OS.

    I like the snapshot feature.

for most home users, I think Windows Shared computer toolkit is fine and for now free.

That crashed IE. I don't have Quicktime on my computer nor do I have Flash installed for Fx so I had to switch to IE because I do have Flash installed for IE.

Anyhow, I found the poll's wording confusing. Why can't I choose all three options?

I love VMWare and I currently use my virtual machine for beta testing software such as KIS 2006 beta. I also plan to create another machine and install some form of Linux on it so I can try and learn Linux.

I don't use my guest machine to deliberately install spyware as some do because I have file sharing enabled between the host box and guest. So, I treat the guest box with same respect, as far as security goes, as the host. I might at some time create another virtual pc and not allow file sharing and use it to see what spyware I can find and infect myself with.

I also like the snapshot feature. I tried MS's Virtual PC and like VMWare much better.

I just downloaded and installed the freeware version "VMWare Player" last night, hoping to play with it this weekend.. anyone have any input on the free version? I've used the Workstation version in the past, and it was pretty cool.. I'm hoping this version isn't too restricted.

(BTW, nice avatar again, Trooper.. you seem to find the good ones :) )

I couldn't live without VMWare workstation, it certainly runs circles around MS's Virtual PC 2004 in terms of performance and functionality. Also very fond of VMWare's ESX product.

I think it is only a player such as Media player. You still need the vmx file from someone else, if you do not have VMware installed on your pc.
It seems like a nice principal though. Now I should be able to build a VM with the programs I want to test on my host pc, then say play it on my laptop.

I will check it out this weekend too.

I don't know if this will be as big as music or movie downloads but am seeing alot of mention of being able to download vmware torrents for the player.
I wonder how this will go?

Also on my Vmware Host, I have KIS also installed and it seems to cover my
Guest OS as well, without installing it on the guest. At least KIS's proactive filters do. Does this have anything to do with file sharing? I didn't think so since you have a choice of which DIR's you want to share.

    So far the documentations sucks.

When I try run my XP Pro vmx. it asks for the vmdk file also which is 4.6 gig.

do we have to have a dvd burner to use this player with our own vmx files so that we can copy the vmdk file also?

    Yes you can !!
Just make absolutely sure the VM-machine is the most active field on your desktop, then plug-in the usb-device. Sometimes it takes several tries, but for me it works just fine.
