I was recently put in a position to try and grab a flash video for someone, which I can usually do no problem. But none of the usual suspects would work (Flashgot, Orbit, FDM, Video Download Helper). After doing a little homework, I think what I'm dealing with is a stream that's encrypted and what I probably need is a screen recorder. This is completely to me and after spending all afternoon researching I thought I'd see if I can get a recommendation. The pickins don't look that great from what I can see, for freeware at least. They all are either bait and switch (claim to be free but aren't), don't work right, or are very limited. Anyone know of a good one for Vista SP2?

ashampoo snap 4 was being given away on chip.de a little while back...check slickdeals.net with a search...not 100% sure it's still live but has been for a while now.

Do you need a screen video recorder or a video grabber/downloader? Because they are two different things. IMHO, the best free screen recorder is ScreenVirtuoso PRO (lot of settings) or Free Screen to Video 2.0 (minimal settings, easier to use). Do not try to download Free Screen to Video from the developer website (Koyotesoft) but from the link I give you because that one is adware free. Koyotesoft uses a web installer instead the direct download link available on CodecPack.co.

I think I must need a recorder. All the others I listed above are grabbers and they aren't working for this particular video. Flashgot, for example, can sniff out the URL, but when I try to download it, I get nothing. It looks like a normal URL, but when I download it the only thing I get is an empty document with a cryptic name like 35810386433 (that's just an example). I think it must be encrypted javascript or something and is bypassing the browser. Thanks for recommendations, I'll try them. :)
