If Webroot is as good at protection as most claim, the choice is clear. Webroot. Period. End of discussion. It's too fast for me to consider anything else. I would like To know if it suffers in the heuristics department. They're a huge company that is all about gathering info back to the cloud, so I'm sure their databases are fine. Kaspersky and BitDefender's extra awesomeness is not enough to forego this kind of speed. I would like an internal AV engine that I can flip on and off. BD's free sounds optimal, although it seemed to not care for Webroot, making Chrome intolerable to use. I thought I might custom install Avast, AVG, or Avira's AV components that webroot doesn't have (i forget what they are, i'll look it up.) Mainly something not web-dependent. I may just throw in Comodo FW. I don't know who's got better heuristics WSA or CFW's D+ and HIPS, though. And I didn't exclude WSA from BD free because I don't know if you can with their interface-for-dummies approach.
    In summation:
    Does BD free allow exclusions?
    What components aren't in WSA?
Are CFW's D+ and HIPS worth a damn next to WSA?
(I'd also like to know if the kiosk function can be modified to handle larger programs, and whether it slows them down significantly. Also, if CFW is laden with options, but is crappier at defense than Win 7 firewall, then screw it.)

All I will say is, if you're not a "high risk user" you are fine with WSA alone. :thumb:

I am a high risk user. I do solo IT work, meaning I download and test a lot of freebies that I wish to know about or inform people about.

Other than that, I'm not sure what I "high risk user" means. Symantec releasd a report not too long ago about how church sites are more likely to be dangerous than porn sites. No risk there.

I also like the level of quick control CFW gives you. The win 7 FW interface is annoying. Don't think I wanna screw with Sphinx or anything though. Also, Sandboxie's delays for the freeware are annoying. Thought I'd give the kiosk another go.

If I could exclude WSA from BD Free I would, but I don't think you can with the free version. I also heard ya can't undo it's actions. I don't need that thing eating up all my tools.

Don't got with Bitdefender if you intend to keep WSA; they are NOT compatible with eachother. I've tried them (Bitdefender Free and WSA) and I got huge problems with freezes et cetera. In fact, Bitdefender is hardly compatible with any other security solution.

If you often expose yourself to risky environments, why not set WSA to warn and suspend when unknown processes is executed? That should keep you safe.

I'll have to make sure i have it setup that way. Seems surely I would have. I guess I'm just being old fashioned. Lacking an internal antivirus engine seems like I'm missing something. And though, as they are a massive company and the synchronous way their AV functions, I'm sure their cloud definitions are great, I haven't the slightest about their heuristics. And if I did opt for a tuned-down comodo firewall, for the interface and connection control, I didn't know if their heuristics (HIPS, D+, whatever) would be a better choice (doubtful, honestly). I figured I would use everything on CFW that isn't on WSA.
Seems like there's always a specialty element to everything though. I trust Webroot, even though their unconventional methods leaves them out of a lot of testing. However, when I had avast installed, a full scan with it picked up a BitCoin miner that has yet to set off webroot. I should hope this is because Webroot doesn't act until the problem file actually does something harmful or unwanted.

I also don't want CFW if it's crappier than Win 7 firewall. But I guess that's for another forum.

Just use WSA as it has many Protecting Shields if you want to Harden it I would set the Firewall this way in the picture below. Also have a look at this Video if WSA misses a virus. And just use a couple of free On-Demand scanners just to check and if you do become infected Webroot support will help clean your system Free of charge with a paid subscription. ;)

I always test freebies inside Sandboxie. Just to not mess up my system.

You're getting good advice here. Avoid Bitdefender, add MBAM and Sandboxie. WSA has some good shields you can harden, and if on-demand scanners find something, Webroot will help you sort things out. Guess I could have just put +1 to what's been said so far.:)

i'd suggest you try complementing WSA with Avira antivirus(free or premium) and Comodo Firewall with Defense+
to answer your question, i've felt comodo Defense+ is more effective than WSA

WSA is strong by itself. It's got rollback features and lot's of shields. :)

Too bad it's not available for Windows 8... it's the biggest flaw with WSA. Other security vendors offer these features for Windows 8, but not Webroot. I still don't buy "it's by design, as Windows 8 doesn't work the same way Windows 7 does". If others can do it, I'm sure Webroot can do it.

I am running WSA with PrivateFirewall on all but one of my systems; some of these computers also have MBAM Pro on them as well.

In the past, I have have run WSA successfully with BullGuard ISS and AVG IS; sometimes you do have to tweak either a WSA setting and/or other-vendor setting to allow the two security systems to coexist peacefully...

As Joe said it's not a flaw it's the limitations within Windows 8 on the way WSA's Firewall works unfortunately. :doubt: I'm sure Joe will chime in and wait till what he says.

WSA got the very extensive and powerful Identity Shield for protecting against data theft and as already mentioned by @TripleHelix, the support team will remove and clean any stubborn threat which could cause pc unbootable (rare in my experience) absolutely free of charge. :)

One should not trust everyhting you see or read on the internet, in this case especially not on YouTube. Also as other members have told you leave the youtube tests out of any discussions on Wilders.
